How a Leadership Network Works

Guest post by: David Beairsto

Article Overview: When business leaders come together to form a leadership network they model the best example to give any business community. Sharing ideas and talents in an effort to deliver inspiration to employees or entrepreneurs is far more effective than single leaders stepping out on their own.

How a Leadership Network Works

When Leaders Work Together I’m trying to do my work in the back of the balcony while my children rehearse for the upcoming stage production of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ but I’m constantly distracted by the various voices that make up the leadership network at the local playhouse. In addition to seeing my 9 year old (she’s the star) grow into a work ethic my father would be proud of I keep hoping all three of my girls recognize how leaders work together for a common objective. There’s an old adage that the fish can’t describe his environment because he lacks the objectivity having never known another. Unfortunately the corporate image of leadership is often depicted by one-upmanship, backstabbing or some other negative connotation. To make matters worse disagreements are often aired directly to the very people expected to follow these leaders. Mutual Respect Everyone works best when their roles or tasks are clearly defined. Leaders who join themselves together typically do so to take advantage of the best they can offer each other. Setting guidelines allows for individual excellence while framing expectations for each objective. When the leadership network is expected to inspire or motivate a group of followers the level of respect they share with each other will determine the overall positive influence upon the entire community. I’m trying to imagine what a disaster this performance would be if the cast (largely amateurs) had to endure bickering between the music director, choreographer and stage manager. Instead I can tell they’ve spent hours working together designing the entire production and their respective roles. Behind the Scenes Even if the community you’re leading doesn’t know what your leadership network has done to prepare in advance for a meeting or conference they’ll be busy either consciously or subconsciously evaluating your leadership. The basis of their evaluation may be on what they experience but that experience is shaped by what they never see. After watching only a fraction of the rehearsals (30 + hours and counting) and realizing I’m not even exposed to a 10th of what my 9 year old has already endured, I have a deeper appreciation for what should take place before people start asking us for money. An hour long presentation that took 30 minutes to throw together isn’t going to impress anyone. Just as it takes a great deal of time and effort funneled into a relatively short performance to entertain an audience, it takes a lot of effort to impress and even more to inspire an entrepreneur. Great Expectations Pulling out all the stops is expected these days. It’s getting harder and harder for individual leaders to compete because a leadership network is capable of delivering much more value for the same cost. Entrepreneurs know they’re all destined to leadership so trying to deliver a performance that is substandard isn’t going to sit well with them. They’re looking for the very characteristics and behavior they’ll one day model. When leaders come together and unite to deliver a performance that is far superior to anything they’d be able to do on their own, they not only offer guidance and a great model, but a pattern that can and should be duplicated. 10 best franchises to get involved 10 best franchises to get involved - My advice is: 1) Go to the library and start reading business books (accounting, finance, etc.) 2) Go to your local community college and enroll in night classes 3) Join the local Chamber of Commerce 4) Network / Network / Network -- through the above sources. Once you have spent two years doing the above, then look for a 55 - 60 year old business person that is looking to reduce their time in the business. Then you can work on a sweetheart financing option.
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! - GT - thanks for the FYI - I'm not sure if we'll put a link back. Something to consider though! Trent - the new category is "Social Network and Media" which was put in to compliment the Online Businesses category that currently exists. Overall the new categories are: - Looking For, Networking and Events - Review My... - Social Network and Media - Brags and Rants These came as a result of Ringo doing research on other forums and thinking about what could be improved on ours to give a better experience for everyone. I hope you enjoy them! David, I'm looking forward to reading your Brag / Rant!

RE: Life isn't fair / 'Ol Boy Network RE: Life isn't fair / 'Ol Boy Network - I certainly won't argue that 'Ol Boy Network practices exist and probably always will to some degree because, yes, people like to work with those like themselves. I am curious, though about reactions to the content and approach of the article itself, particularly given that it is from an HR / Management consultant: 1) What does the phrase "'Ol Boy Network" mean to you? 2) Do readers view his discussion as an impartial observation of the phenomenon or do his comments such as "...is not a bad thing," "it's natural," and "are normal occurences" sound like he's expressing an opinion that the practices are OK to continue because that's how it's always been? 3) Would the nature and direction of the content affect your tendency to hire this individual as a consultant? I tried to explore this with the author himself but he was extremely defensive and somewhat insulting regarding the possibility that his article might be perceived as endorsing the practice. I'm looking for a barometer check.
