Lacing Your Internet Presence With Direct Response

Guest post by: David Beairsto

Article Overview: When direct response is woven into your entire internet presence it becomes an online extension of how conversations take place in person. The internet then offers you the ability to form powerful relationships with thousands of people that you may never actually meet in person.

Lacing Your Internet Presence With Direct Response

It Isn't Toxic Lacing your internet presence with direct response isn't like mixing poison into a batch of cookies; it's like remembering to add sugar.

Composing your online content requires many ingredients to make it effective, interesting and compelling. Not all content is created equal but unless you're using direct response you'll never know it.

Think of your internet presence like being in the same room with your visitor because you essentially are. If you were actually there in person there would be acceptable protocols involved in getting acquainted.

What Do You Expect?

If you've gone through the pains of baking homemade cookies it's ok to ask if people liked them. If you know they're great, you expect compliments. If they're the best cookies imaginable people will want the recipe.

Here are a few simple rules to follow on a blog post:

1. Ask visitors to leave comments

2. Encourage visitors to share your information

3. Invite them somewhere else

These ‘Calls to Action' would be acceptable forms of protocol in almost any circumstance. There should always be a natural progression in the relationships you form online because the same experience is expected everywhere else.

Your Purpose or Intent

If all you want to do is sell something to somebody you'll quickly discover that no degree of subtlety will disguise your intent.

(Let me kick this metaphor one more time to see if it's still alive.)

If you invite someone into your home (website or blog) and offer them a cookie the gesture is taken as being hospitable.

You direct the conversation (content) around the experience of tasting cookies unlike anything ever tasted before. Because your visitor is intrigued you ask if they'd like to hear the story (email, article or related page) behind these cookies.

When the story ends some will be so fascinated they'll want to know about your cookbook (low cost product) your club (mid-range product) or the full course you offer (high end product) on how to make cookies just like these.

Immersed in Your Internet Presence

When direct response is done correctly the outcome isn't a sale here or there, it is a never ending stream of followers who are in love with who you are and what you offer.

They are always appreciative of what you share because the entire experience of knowing you is valuable to them.

There is a powerful reward awaiting those who manage to develop these types of relationships with thousands of people they'll never actually meet in person. It all begins if they're given a reason and the option to respond to you.

Re: What newsletter program to use? - Like GT and David I use Get Response and have not had any problems with them other than when they were converting to their upgrade. So as long as they continue to give me the service I will stick with them. I know that most people recommend Aweber. MichelleJ

Re: Keep going! Re: Keep going! - Years ago, while in the military, I started to faint in the operating room with one of my sons, the Dr suggested I leave. I was glad to get going, got to the door, opened looking for the toilet (some called it water closets, we called it the head) Outside the faint continued when a desk clerk came running, sir, Can I help you Sir? Response something like "Just help get me to that damn (head) door" Thanks" Sometimes a little will help get you going again
Re: Forums Blog? Re: Forums Blog? -
Interesting idea Don. In my weekly newsletter I show the most recent forum posts and on the side of every page on the website (not the forums) I also show the most recent entries.[/quote:1yww01zw] The Newsletter update is great for people _already_ signed up to the forums. The Blog would be a teaser for those who are unaware of it entirely.
How often would you see the blog being updated?[/quote:1yww01zw] I would say no more frequently than once a week. It would be more an an ad than an interactive forum. Although, that can change.
Any other ideas out there on a blog or ways to show the most popular topics?[/quote:1yww01zw] If you really want a big Internet Presence, this is what I have learned works very well: 1/ Website 2/ Blog 3/ MySpace 4/ Press Release 5/ Ads posted on free & paid classified websites 6/ Networking 7/ website submission to search engines You will notice that only 1 out of the 7 requires human contact. The other 6 will begin to create a presence and if the right keywords are used, then people doing searches for those keywords will find many references to this site. Networking helps build your 'real world presence'. I haven't done any aggressive marketing of my site yet the hits just keep on increasing on a monthly basis. I'm on track to be making 20,000 hits (probably more) this year. Not bad for not spending a dime on advertising and being fairly casual about what I do with the site. That's what I have learned thus far online. The more I learn, the more hits grow.
