Entrepreneurs tend to move about frequently and like the ability to conduct their internet business from anywhere they happen to be.

The motivation to prepare this article just happened to coincide with questions associates asked me about being more organized at home. They wanted a backup plan in case their computer dies. What started as a materials list turned into a 5 step formula to take your business on the road.

While the list is prepared specifically for what we do on a consistent basis, anyone can adapt the list by either expanding or eliminating items they simply won't use. It's a short list because doing your business from anywhere also includes mountain climbing; we don't want to get weighed down.

1. Laptop - Small Business Model (approx. $800.00)

2. Spread sheet program (usually included with a new laptop purchase)

3. Gmail account (other internet email accounts work)

4. Headphones

5. Cell phone

Laptop

If you already own a laptop and you're comfortable with it just scratch that item off the list. I happen to have 4 of them in my house, none of which is used for business.

The price is a good estimation of what you'd want in a small business machine:

a) Some type of personal security like finger print or face recognition and encryption.

b) A built in webcam. (If you EVER make videos)

c) Built in wireless and mobile broadband capability.

They all have bigger hard drives than both the PC towers at my feet and more RAM than both my office computers combined. (Why do I suddenly want a new laptop?)

Spreadsheet

If you're buying a new machine make sure they have a spread sheet program in there. This tool becomes more valuable the more it is utilized. Even if you only run one business you might have half a dozen spreadsheets keeping everything straight.

For instance having a presence online always includes multiple web 2.0 sites and various book marking or social media sites. Trying to keep the information organized on these web sites alone can be confusing without the spreadsheet.

Gmail

The reason these two items are listed back to back is that Gmail has a spreadsheet program available. One of the tasks I'll have to work through with my associates is helping them get their spreadsheets backed up online for their convenience.

From the very beginning of my online business experience Gmail came highly recommended because almost everything you need that isn't on your actual business website can be found there. If you've got the webcam built into the laptop you can send me a video message from the deck of the cruise ship to brighten my day; all from Gmail.

Running a business from anywhere requires tools that are also available wherever we are. The internet business model is convenient because most of what we need is stored online somewhere. Even though the laptop has a 350G hard drive, it makes more sense to store the videos online.

Headphones

I put it on the list because they should be in the laptop case already.

Cell Phone

If I didn't include this, the first 5 comments would be telling me I forgot to list the cell phone.

I don't go to bed at night or downstairs for breakfast without my cell phone. Not everyone keeps this device with them all the time. I still know people who don't have reception at their homes. It's easier for them to drive off without them because they haven't touched it all day.

Even with a laptop that can double as a cell phone, I'd recommend this device for anyone that runs their business from anywhere they go.

I have spoken to many "entrepreneurs-to-be" that have a desire to work for themselves but can't overcome the fear of making that critical leap. The truth of the matter is, if fear is preventing you from moving forward with your own business you need to overcome that fear first. To do this, try this exercise: 1. Write down as many detailed reasons why you are DISSATISFIED with remaining in your job until you retire. E.g., it won't let you achieve the lifestyle you desire; you are sick of commuting an hour each day; etc. 2. Write down in as much detail as possible your VISION of what your life will be like once you have your own business and you are fully engaged in it. Enjoy this step. 3. Create a list of the action steps you need to actually complete to get things rolling. What do you need to do first? Second? Third? Create a step by step plan. These three steps all work together to overcome any resistance you may feel towards making a major change in your career. If after these exercises, you are still too afraid, look at what you have written down. Chances are one of the three forces for change (dissatisfaction, vision, or first steps) are not yet strong enough to overcome your fear. Perhaps, once you really thought about it, things aren't really that bad in your current career, etc.... Hope this helps.
How do you start to franchise? - If you have a successful business that has the capacity to be a great franchise, what are the initial steps you take to begin the process?
you need passion/desire and sustainable persistance - sounds over simplified, but to me it has been very true. starting a business should be more about starting a big life change towards something that you have unwaivering passion and desire to do. the truth is you will never know all you need to know to start the business your a starting. the truth is there are many things that will test your resolve to starting your business. from simple things like making the time to do small tasks or making personal sacrifices like spending less time with your family. i've also come to learn that starting a business is about sustainable persistence. ensure that you can continue to sustain your current responsibilities while taking small steps towards your business everyday. most often, i'd say don't quit your job. assuming you have bills to pay. sustain your ability to take care of those bills while taking those baby steps towards the business you desire. in the end, nothing is overnight. it's more like being a farmer. planting seeds of thought, nurturing them, weathering storms, and working hard everyday with the risk that there may not be any fruit. here's where the passion and desire come in. because if you really are passionate and desire your business idea, you will have no problem re-planting those seeds and starting over again. here's where sustainable persistence comes in. if you disregard your responsibilities in pursuit of your dream business and it doesn't work out, you don't want to have to sell the farm. selling the farm or being put in position where you need to put all your focus on just surviving puts you further away from your dream. think long and hard about that passion/desire. make sure it is true and sincere with your own DNA. if it is true. you will succeed.
Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? - I've been dealing with the same dilemma. The bottom line is that I have too many projects going on at once. I can only let go of a few, but I can say no to new projects. The way I manage it is by keeping an outline of my overall business plan...of where I am headed in the long-term. I take a look at each project and focus on the ones that are most important to my long-term success. The only challenge I'm having with that now, is having the patience to build my business slowly. I wish it could be all done now, but I have to get comfortable with baby steps.
Hello - Hi everyone, This is my first time writing on a forum such as this one. I am very new to the business world and never dreamed of starting up my own small business. The idea came to me while gaining some experience in commercial cleaning at my present employer. I thought this would be an excelleny way to earn extra money while still remaining in my career as an educator. That being said, my boyfriend and I are currently in the process of organizng and registering our company name; however, I find that the steps involved in starting a new business are very complicated for a first timer, not to mention there is somewhat of an overload of information available on the internet. If anyone who is more experienced than myself and is able to lend me some adivce in terms of licencing as well as insarance for my business, it would greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Loredana
