How To Preserve Your Direct Marketing Email List

Written by: David Beairsto

Article Overview: Permission marketing is the principle behind building a direct marketing email list. Given the choice, shoppers will likely leave a cluttered display-crazy store to find a more pleasant experience. If we hit our list with enough junk they're not interested in, they'll be gone.

How To Preserve Your Direct Marketing Email List

What's On Display Out of respect for my direct marketing email list I never include more than three items of interest in any one message. My goal is to focus on just one thing. If I find the item useful and exciting I don't want to detract attention from it.

Ever walk into a department store where the display racks have taken over? It's hard enough to navigate through the aisles and find what you're looking for. Between the stacks of products and the gaudy signs a person can be driven to distraction.

Nothing in Common

The only reason I ever consider the second or third item of interest is when they compliment one another. For instance if I'm marketing a book on ‘Caring for House Plants' and I know about an available online course or a video that explains the same topic, I'll add those links as a matter of convenience.

Anyone on a direct marketing email list has already opted in for a specific reason. The people who have an interest in indoor greenery aren't necessarily interested in organic farming. If I don't appreciate the warehouse attitude of, ‘Here's everything in one place, go and find it,' why would I want to open an email that does the same?

They Can Always Opt Out

Permission marketing is the principle behind building a direct marketing email list. Given the choice, shoppers will likely leave a cluttered display-crazy store to find a more pleasant experience. If we hit our list with enough junk they're not interested in, they'll be gone.

Direct marketing through regular mail or email is effective because the message is usually short, to the point and of interest to anyone on the list. People stay because they buy items of interest to them. They won't wander around or read a bunch of ad copy for very long before leaving for good.

Re: Email Marketing, Permission Based Re: Email Marketing, Permission Based - Thanks for this great informative post. I agreed with you on "email marketing" as one of the best internet marketing. And using double - opt -in will definitely help in email marketing. If we keep looking at the way spammers do send mail, one may say that days of "email marketing" are numbered but with double opt in, I think "email marketing" will still continue to work. Cheers!

Cheers![/quote:c0jwwo97] Offering a strategic mailing system and high quality content is much more important to me than a double opt in option. Offering something of value and not overloading your mailings is a long term plan to use email marketing effectively. A double opt in is over in the beginning - nothing long term and ongoing. I'd prefer opting in once and give me the option to opt out if the content isn't good enough. Shri
Re: What is Email marketing? Re: What is Email marketing? -
Email marketing is good if you have good contact base and wants to get in touch with very often. Since you have a new site, you can go with online marketing activities and later do the email marketing activities. Thanks Robert[/quote:q1y907uc] I would agree with this, in order to do email marketing you would first need some sort of list of people to whom you are going to market or promote your business. If your website is still new I would concentrate more on adding content to it in the form of articles. The more content you have the greater the chance that your website will be listed by Google and other search engines and this will give you good exposure, it will also help to increase backlinks to your site which will result in more traffic. Re: What is Email marketing? Re: What is Email marketing? - Do a list building activity using opt-in. Or you can buy database of potential customers from mailing list providers and do an email blast. or you can ask them to do an email campaign. But, i would recommend to put an opt-in code and let the people subscribe for it. That is better. What is others' opinion? Thanks Robert
Re: The Best Method for Online Marketing Re: The Best Method for Online Marketing -
I found success with email marketing and combining it with social networking and social media tools. Alternatively, when I collected business reviews from my customers and posted them to my website, I again saw a surge of traffic. Getting active for at least half an hour everyday for blogging and forum posting, pays well too.[/quote:4toxn76d] I would imagine that email marketing works best if one already has a list of subscribers to send the emails to.
