How to Promote Your Business on Twitter

The power of twitter to promote your business is tremendous. You literally can reach thousands of people just with a click of the mouse Imagine, reach thousands with just a click. It is extremely powerful. Here's how you can grow your Twitter account to promote your business to thousands of people and start making some real money.

If you are an online business owner and you want to promote your business using Twitter, you work starts before you open an account. Picking a user name is very important. A lot of people are using very poor choices for names and therefore hurting their business right from the start. I would recommend just use your full name. If it is a complicated name and you think it might hurt you than create a positive name, something that has a good taste. Stay away from any name that has the word money or MLM in it, it has been done and most people just turn them off now.

Next is your BIO. People will relate to you through your bio so take some time to fill it out. Name the schools you attended, what you do you for fun and your business. People need to know you are in business. Keep it in good taste but don't be shy here.

Load a very good picture of you. It may be worth the investment to get a professional to take a picture of you. You can find some very good free background setting for your Twitter account at Twitterimage.com. Find something that will be appeasing to your new followers.

When you start tweeting the worst thing you can do is to start advertising your business right away. Wait until you have at least a thousand followers before you do. Start with motivational quotes, good article you read, YouTube videos etc. etc. Send anywhere from 8-12 tweets a day minimum. You can program your tweets to be sent at certain times at SocialOomph.com for free.

To start following people, go find a big name in the online business industry like Mike Dillards or Gregg Davison and start following their followers. Do 100 a day for the 1st week and then move up to 200 a day for another week. You see my trend here. Make sure you make yourself familiar with the Twitter rules about following and unfollowing when you get started. There are some rules about how many you can follow vs. how many are following you. Remember this, if you are following someone that is not following you, that is a wasted time. Every 24-36 hours, go back into the people you are following and unfollow anyone not following you. If they are not following you that means they are not seeing your tweets.

Send direct message to people that are following you. Thank them and start building a relationship with them and don't talk about your business unless they ask you about it and be brief about it when they do. Most online business now have a website that will do the selling for you. So in a kind way, refer them to your website if they start asking you specific questions about what you do. You can also build relationship with the people that are retweeting your tweets. Send them also a direct message to thank them and start building a relationship with them as well.

On Friday, Twitter has what they call Follow Friday. That is where people recommend other Twitter to their followers. Be active by recommending others and start building relationship that way.

Always follow people that follow you, that is an unwritten rule. Make sure you follow the Twitter rules. Some people have been too aggressive in trying to build their list of followers and their accounts have been suspended. Follow the rules and you will be fine.

When you start marketing, follow a ratio of about 1 advertisement for every 5-6 tweets. No one wants anything pushed down their throats. If they see you trying hard to sell something, they will tune you off.

As you may have notice, I did not mention advertisement a lot. That was on purpose. Twitter is about selling yourself, not you what you do. Learn to brand yourself and start earning the trust of the people following you and your business will grow tremendously.

Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I use Facebook pages for Business and rarely ever use Twitter. I hace lost count of the no. of Hotels that I have visited, regarding their marketing campaigns, that may have 5k Facebook Fans and only 100 followers on Twitter. It is a lot more difficult to engage with people on Twitter and thus harder to gain traction. If you are a business like Nike, then Twitter is great, but if you are an SME, then focus on Facebook or LinkedIn (if you are providing a professional service.) You can always have your Facebook feed directly in to Twitter, so you can have a presence on both, but do the work on one. Also check out ping.fm for managing campaigns - it is a free tool, and a great time saver.

Re: Using Twitter To Double Your Traffic? Re: Using Twitter To Double Your Traffic? - I'm sure in many cases Twitter sends more traffic than Search Engines because most people don't have good enough SE rankings to get SE traffic. But anyone can get Twitter traffic. The problem is that Twitter traffic won't convert for the most part and SE traffic will. I'd venture to say that 98% of the time getting just 100 visitors from search is better than getting 2000+ from Twitter.
