Back 15 to 20 years ago, all businesses would use the conventional marketing methods like television, radio and newspapers. Obviously, these methods are still use today but companies have moved about half of their allotted budget towards internet marketing. It is a lot cheaper and the reward is much greater as people are looking for your type of business when searching the internet, therefore you are more likely to make a sale.

Now, there are still guidelines, rules and unwritten rules you should follow. Below is a list of what you should know to avoid costly mistakes for you or your business.

The idea behind marketing is to make your business visible and known to the public. If the people looking for your product or service do not know you exist, you will struggle staying in business. So learn to make yourself or your business VISIBLE. The more positive visibility your business gets, the more success you will experience. To do that, start a Twitter and Facebook account and interact with other like minded individuals. List you or your business in all directories you can find. Build a welcoming Blog, write articles about what you do and publish them. Use Video marketing to let people see you and start trusting you.

Build a list of customers. Staying in touch with your customers is very important. You do not want to spam them, but keep them inform of what you or business is doing will only help you in the long run. You can send them articles you wrote, invite them to join you on Facebook or Twitter, send them special promotions. Do not exceed more than one email every couple of days. You want your list to see you but not get tired of you.

Spam is a big NO NO. It is such a turn off. People you want to be involved in your business will turn you off every time they see something from you. Example is on my Twitter account; I have over 23,000 followers at the time of this article. Every time I see an ADD sent to my inbox, I just delete it without looking at the link. If I see the same ADD come back again, I go and block that person off every time so I do not see their ADD again. It is the same principal with email marketing. If they don't like what you send them, they will turn you off.

Brand yourself as an expert. This process takes a little more time but when done correctly, it will repay you a thousand fold. Smiling, be positive and helping others in everything you do will help people not only get to know you but see you as a trust worthy person and as an expert in your field.

If you have a low budget, Internet Marketing is certainly a great place to start. Most of the methods mentioned in this article are free or very low cost. When done correctly, they are just as effective as a high cost marketing method.

Forum Marketing Yahoo Answers (I need to use more of) SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Bum Marketing or Article marketing P-P-C (Pay Per Click) Marketing Online Directories Hope this helps.
