Entrepreneurs Mindset – Learning For Yourself, Thinking For Yourself & Accepting Responsiblity

I would never have described myself as having an entrepreneurial mindset but, I have always been the type of person who likes to learn how to do things properly and to make my decisions based on my own feelings/thoughts rather than someone else's. I am the type of person who will set myself goals and usually opt for the hard route because I know that when extra effort is required to achieve something then you learn it better and you appreciate the end result more. So, looking at it this way I suppose I have always been an entrepreneur.

Last week I decided to buy a bike, this is the first one I have had for over 20 years and my first brand new one ever. So, off we all went to the bike shop and I can tell you I was feeling very excited. Our daughter is now almost 8 and she loves to cycle, so we decided that as a family this was a great activity we could all enjoy together. Anyway, back to the bike shop, I walked in and announced I wanted a bike for me and what were my options? Well, did I want off road, low cost, high cost, how many gears? How many gears? My last bike had precisely 1 and I rode that bike for years and years for miles and miles quite happily with just the 1 gear. Ok, so it was not always an easy ride but if I wanted to go somewhere then I just had to get on with it and get pedalling. The point I am making here is that everything in life today is designed to make things easy for us, to stop us having to work hard to strive for things. With my 1 geared bike I managed to go everywhere I can go now with 18 gears but, I just had to work that little bit harder at it and always got there in the end.

It seems that every choice we are given today is an easy route with shortcuts that miss out important parts of the journey. Today we sit exams where we are given options to choose the answer from - what happened to good old fashioned essay style answers where you actually had to sit and revise and think to learn something properly? We go to the supermarket where the choice of readymade meals gets bigger every week - does no one learn to cook proper food at school anymore or is it just that people either cannot be bothered or do not make time?

I remember my very first house was a very small one bedroom terrace house, it had no driveway and a tiny garden but it was mine and I bought it and more to the point I could afford it. Several years later I came to sell it and times had moved on. First time buyers were now saying that they wanted 2 bedrooms, they wanted a driveway and a garage and a garden and to get all of this they were prepared to take out loans for far more than they could truly afford just so they could have it all 'now'. They were not prepared to wait and save up until they had the money they required and the banks duly obliged and loaned them the money (now that's another story...)

We are given easy options and short cuts for most things we do and governments increasingly like to take away personal responsibility by making decisions for us. This in turn creates a nation of dependant people who no longer know how to accept responsibility, who cannot think for themselves and who often expect to be supported and carried by the state. We now live in a society where making our own decisions and learning by experience is not really encouraged and where everything is geared towards making a short cut and making it easy & learning to do as we are told.

Only by learning 'how' to do things properly and learning for ourselves do we grow as people. By learning to do things ourselves we discover and learn to think independently not as 'they' want us to think. Entrepreneurs are people who do not fit the 'average' mindset as they willingly take that responsibility for themselves and their actions. Personal development/mindset & experiential learning are the most important parts to becoming an entrepreneur because once you learn to look beyond the walls that society creates for us do you begin to see the endless opportunities and possibilities that are open to anyone and everyone who is prepared to accept that responsibility.

Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time - Hi Evan, I have a new suggestion for "Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time" and a suggestion for your Learning from the Masters series: 1. Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time = Christopher Columbus: "... he saw the possibility of treasure and commerce where others saw only danger. He committed so wholeheartedly to that vision that not even dozens of rejections and ongoing penury could dissuade him from pursuing a journey to Asia via the West. He built on his technical strengths as a seaman to plan a viable journey and eventually marshal an expedition." - Christopher Hoenig, 6 Essential Secrets for Thinking on a New Level I bought Hoenig's book about 10 years ago but couldn't make head or tail of it then... reading it now and finding it inspirational... 2. CEOs and Email - Slaves? CEOs and Email - Slaves? - I wonder if the emails they are responding to are filtered thru their assistants first 'cos they seem to spend a lot of their off hours responding to them. True they are successful but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay that price. I'd be interested to know what's the in the typical day planner of Entrepreneurs on the Forum. Entrepreneurs are a different breed than Paid Employees- so it would be interesting to view the contrast.

Hiring introverts vs. extroverts Hiring introverts vs. extroverts - Hi Kevin - interesting topic! Thinking back over my career as an entrepreneur and the people I've brought on, most of them have been introverts. The exception usually comes with the sales function (but not always). It's generally hard to be a good salesperson if you are an introvert.
