What is coaching?

Coaching enables learning and development to occur and by effective learning and development the output should be improved performance or achieved objectives. There are different areas of coaching and you can almost certainly find one for any area of your personal or work life.

Sometimes we are presented with trying times and having a neutral perspective of a coach can help you to work your way through providing you with solutions you are happy and comfortable with and ones which achieve good results.

How can coaching help you?

If you are going through change or a difficult time coaching can help you work your way through the situation by helping to derive solutions and possibly to think of ones which you would never have explored before. Coaching therefore is not to be mistaken for mentoring as this is a totally separate thing.

I can see where some may confuse coaching and mentoring as one and the same, but a simple definition of mentoring is

"off-line help by one person to another in making significant transitions in knowledge, work or thinking" Reference: Clutterbuck, D & Megginson, D, Mentoring Executives and Directors (1999) page 3

A good coach should help you open up your mind without making suggestions, as this is not the point of coaching. A coach is there to guide your thought process and to enable you to focus on and achieve your aim. They help keep you on track so to speak.

Sometimes you may not be clear of what it is you want, this is where a coach comes in to help you define what it is you want. Then they work with you to help you define ways and means that will aid you to achieve that want.

What types of people use coaching?

A few years back you used to only see corporate executives or professional people hire coaches, that image has now changed and now just about anyone can hire a coach for any situation.

Many who seek a coach are those looking for a career change, but more and more people want to maximise their potential with an existing employer or want to find a way to achieve a better balance within their work and home lives and see coaching as a way of working things through.

There has been a huge increase recently in the areas of small business coaching, performance coaching and life coaching particularly throughout the tough economic times we are currently going through.

Types of Coaches available

There is now a wide variety of different types of coaches and you need to be clear which one will help you.

Sports Coaches , Youth Coaches, Business Coaches , Life Coaches, Executive & Corporate Coaches, Wellness Coaches, Style Coach, Voice Coaches, Skills Coaches, Performance Coaching and so forth. All to help inspire, improve performance, skills, aid development, achieve goals, the next level and so forth.

Coaching Fees

Be expected to pay anywhere between £50 and hour to £250 an hour depending on the type of coaching you are receiving. Some do half hour slots too, many are negotiable with their fees and terms, just ask before taking anything up.
