Well, a press release is a written communication that reports on an event or circumstance by a third party which is then provided
to the news media to promote through various channels. A press release is generally biased toward the objectives of the press
release's author and is most often viewed as raw materials by the media when creating news content. Press Release writing is an art
and what this article will do is to give you tips on how to write press releases.
Firstly, when writing a press release you must report in the "third person". This is the same as a news release, the idea behind a press release is to be able to report on an event, circumstance or occurrence by a third party. One thing to do when writing a press release or news release it to consider yourself as the report and report on yourself or your business through another persons eyes.
Press Releases should be under 500 words, generally two to three paragraphs and you must have a headline that stands out, this tends to create a more effective press release.
Remember, this content is intended to be use by the media, so be accurate and reasonable detailed.
(Begin with the text below)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Headline
Keep it to One Sentence. Use a headline that grabs peoples attention. Remember just like article writing capitalise the first letter of all words.
Try not to use exclamation marks because this sends out the message that your release is advertising and not news.
You need to generate good publicity through your press release making it seem credible news.
Paragraph 1
Should be a short introduction summarising the news release, you want to get this in up front, just in case the reader does not have time
to read the full press release. Include a hook or story in here so that the reader wants to read more about your press release.
Paragraph 2
You could write more detail about the company or event you are promoting in your press release. Keep it factual and accurate and ensure you use correct grammar as you do not want to comprise your credibility. Pick up on the information used from your first paragraph and tie it in to the second paragraph, include quotes from customers or experts in the industry you are writing about.
The more effective press releases usually utilise a strategy known as the inverted pyramid which is where you write about the most important information first including any quotes.
Additional Paragraphs
The final paragraph should summarise the key points of your release, remember to keep the press release to fewer than 500 words.
Make it concise and to the point.
Final Paragraph
Here you want to provide the reader with additional information about products, events, website location, how to contact you etc. You may also want to include background information about the company featured in the release and include any disclaimers.
(End with these characters immediately below)
