MLM secrets-business opportunity?

Written by: Cliff Williams

Article Overview: As someone who has twice experienced the trials and tribulations of an MLM business opportunity I can give you the benefit of that experience. As Archibald Macleish said, “There is only one thing more painful than learning by experience and that is not learning by experience.” So, to help you, here are my thoughts on the pitfalls of building your business, from the struggle to get leads to the problems of developing and keeping a team. These are the MLM secrets that you don’t hear about until it’s too late.

MLM secrets-business opportunity?

After decades of experience in direct sales I then turned my hand to MLM (Multi Level Marketing). The theory was great, get paid for sales, build a team and get paid for their efforts as well, giving a residual income, allegedly for life. Unfortunately, having tried two MLM companies I found that the theory didn’t quite match up to the practice, even though I was earning up to several hundred pounds a week with the prospect of increasing income, albeit a slow increase.

In each company the joining instructions were the same, start with a list of family and friends who you could “attack” and show them the wonderful MLM business opportunity that you had for them. This was your warm list. I tell you this, there is nothing warm about selling to family and friends! It sounds easy to do but to many this is both embarrassing and awkward, especially if they’ve already tried several opportunities beforehand. Then there was the memory jogger, “who do you know who is a policeman, who is a hairdresser, a driver?” It went through hundreds of different occupations, names, hobbies, sports, places, etc., etc. in order to build your list of prospects. There was the distribution of flyers, letter drops, newspaper adverts, shop window adverts, posters on lamp posts, posters on road signs (we got into trouble from the local council for that!), knocking on doors and, of course, the three foot rule. All this meant loads of money going out on petrol and car expenses, not to mention shoe leather! The main problem about these methods was that they were all basically cold calling.

I did get results but the leads were generally of poor quality which led to a pretty awful retention rate and so it became a race to replace lost team members before the team could begin to grow. No wonder that it’s said that 97% of network marketers fail, an MLM secret that is never mentioned to new members. While we’re talking about retention, one of the greatest drawbacks that the successful entrepreneur faces is losing a star member of his team to another company. Money talks and people can be very fickle. If a top producer in your team does leave for more money or a better business opportunity they will naturally take their personal team with them to ensure their success in their new company and that could mean losing hundreds or even thousands from the successful entrepreneur’s team. What a disaster that would be. Success to poverty in one easy movement.

The modern way is to bring yourself up to date and work smarter by marketing on the Internet, although even then there is still the risk of losing a star member of your MLM team. Many companies give you a lovely website these days with their MLM business opportunity, which sounds a great idea, but these websites are branding the company and their products. People join people, not companies, so a website should be branding you in order that prospects can get to know, like and trust you and then they are more likely to buy off you or to join your business. Also on the downside is that the companies do not drive traffic to the individual’s website and don’t teach their Internet marketers how to drive traffic to their websites either. (At this point I feel I should refer readers to a previous article of mine, “The Ideal Internet Marketing Opportunity - Invaluable Tips to Save You Time and Money.”)

As can be seen above, the old way of Multi Level Marketing is no walk in the park, relying on outdated methods of marketing and recruiting. I’m not saying that no-one can be successful using these traditional methods. The facts show that the occasional person can indeed earn large sums of money, although in most of these instances the basic foundations were laid many years ago. Take my tip, when choosing between the old and the new, the Internet is the way to go but, of course, Internet marketing raises its own problems and I’ll deal with those another time.

Re: How do you stay motivated as a startup? - [quote="BuzzAroundBooks":oaw6ne0y]Hi Everyone, I was wondering if some of you could share a few tips on how you stay motivated as a new entrepreneur. For instance, what do you do when: • You lose an opportunity, sale or client • You see a competitor doing something very well • An expense costs more than you bargained for • Your hard work and efforts haven't yielded any significant results yet Thanks![/quote:oaw6ne0y] Lose an opportunity - i try to remember that there are millions of fish in the sea... i lose one.. there's still plenty of opportunity to go after more. And depending on who it is.. i feel honored to have even had the opportunity to go for it. Seeing a competitor do something well is actually a good motivator for me. It will push me to finish or upgrade one of my services or marketing campaigns. All of business is about trial and error... so if my hard work isn't seeing results, than i tweak my practices a bit until they do. Test and retest. Talk to others...see what it is that i'm doing differently.
Re: Student Business Plan competition huge prizes submit NOW! Re: Student Business Plan competition huge prizes submit NOW! - This is a successful annual competition that will do wonders for any aspiring entrepreneur. The mentorship sounds fantastic, and the opportunity to present yourself to worthwhile investors (let alone the best investors) is a tremendous opportunity. Good luck to everyone during the judged rounds!
Another favorite quote Another favorite quote - Said by the inimitable Edna Mode among others: "Luck favors the prepared." I can't count the number of occasions where serendipity placed the perfect opportunity close to my hands...all I had to do was reach out and touch it... but I was not prepared with the information I needed to take advantage of the opportunity. I [i:ny1pux5q]should [/i:ny1pux5q]have been, but I wasn't. Ah, the regrets of yesteryear...
Re: Specific Strategies To Raise PR Levels? Re: Specific Strategies To Raise PR Levels? - Trent is right, PR is important for link building, it is harder to link to a high PR site, but if the opportunity comes in your way do it. People try to avoid low PR sites, because of the idea these sites will pull them down, but as I mentioned in other forum, those low PR sites may gain high PR in the future and then they will charge for a backlink, and then you will be sorry you missed your opportunity.
Re: How can you distinguish real from fake opportunities? Re: How can you distinguish real from fake opportunities? - Hi Kevin, Unfortunately this sort of thing happens all too often. It's sometimes hard to distinguish a fake opportunity from a real one. However, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is. Any opportunity that promises money with no effort on your part or promises success overnight, run the other direction. You can also research the opportunity first to see what others are saying about. If it's a scam, a quick Google search will tell you pretty quickly. About recycled content... it's everywhere. It's no different than taking crap and packaging it up into a pretty little package with a bow on top. Unwrap it, and it's still crap. A lot of ebooks you find nowadays are like that. Mostly scammers or lazy wannabe marketers sell that junk. Luckily word gets out quick before they can make a lot of money. $100 - $150 is very expensive for an ebook on online marketing. Not to mention you can find most of the information you need for free on forums. Sorry to hear that happened to your friend.
