The Internet Marketing Dictionary describes keyword research as the following:

Keyword Research - "Keyword Research is the action of searching for and finding those keywords which users actually use to find specific content on the Internet."

As online marketers, our constant goal is to achieve search engine dominance. Increasing your search engine ranking is simply done by focusing on keyword research.

I've mentored many individuals that have over looked this very important step. Obtaining a top search engine ranking is extremely competitive. This is mostly due to the competitiveness of the keyword phrases. When focusing on keyword phrases, there are elements that you must consider in your research.

For instance, you must focus on keyword phrases that doesn't have strong competition, but are frequently searched for. A balance between the two must be made. It is possible for a website to have a ranked keyword phrase and not obtain its full optimization. If that phrase receive a low number of searches, that keyword is useless.

You must first find a keyword phrase that isn't too competitive and receives an adequate number of monthly searches. The next step is to extensively check out your competitors. Less competition equals smaller bid prices. There are many keyword tools available online to assist you. Some are free to use while others charge a fee.

Upon completing your keyword research and verifying your choice of keywords and keyword phrases, it's time to build your page around the keywords you've chosen. Construct your meta tags, titles, and web copy to include these keyword phrases. This will help inform the search engines what your web site content is so it may rank your website correctly.

Improving your search engine doesn't stop here. You must also utilize link building and off page optimization tactics as well. Off page optimization demands constant effort that uses new content and additional links from third party websites. Your strategy doesn't have to be complex. As a matter of fact, the most effective strategies are the most basic. Start with a link building plan that includes article directories, web site directories, blogs, and social bookmarking sites. Look for other resources where you can establish in bound links as well.

Remember these steps when it comes to keywords:

• Are they related to the product/services one wants to advertise,
• Does it have an adequate number of daily searches?
• What is the competition on keyword phase? Having little competition from other advertisers as possible because little competition usually means smaller bid prices. This is especially true for PPC advertisers and SEO experts. If you were an AdSense publishers it would be the opposite; highly competitive keywords with a high earning per click.
• Your page should have a meaning that indicate that the user is willing to spend money (e.g. a high percentage of users searching for "iPod" might only look for general information on iPods but someone searching for "black iPod nano 8GB" most probably wants to buy one).

Since your articles can show up in the search engines for specific keywords, you'll want to optimize" each article for a long-tailed keyword. Example below:

In review, If you want to increase your organic search engine ranking, do a keyword research. By choosing the correct keywords, you'll be able to maximize your website potential more quickly than your competitors. After choosing the right keywords, focus on integrating your chosen keywords into your web site. Then you' are ready for link building and other off page optimization tactics that significantly improve rankings.
