While this may be a contributing factor, the main reason is because of the people themselves who start the business. In order for a top online business to be exactly that, a person must have a strong work ethic and not become lazy simply because they have the chance to become their own boss. Now is the chance to explore common mistakes people make when starting their own business.

Human nature leads to a lack of focus. Especially in a time when short attention spans abound, it can be difficult to learn to focus on what is most important in a start up home based business. The successful percentages of individuals know that most of the business time should be spent on activities that will produce revenue for them. Plan your days carefully by filling 90% of the time you spend on your top online business with revenue-earning activities. Also, once you find that one top online business, stop wasting your time comparing it to other opportunities and commit 100% to your decision.

Consistency is essential to the success of even a top online business opportunity. This is another way your planner can be useful. Set goals for yourself to keep your efforts on track. If you are barely getting your profitable home based business started, your first goal should be to make a dozen sales. As you begin seeing an income generate, you can set monthly income goals for yourself. As you accomplish these goals, it will help you stay even more on track.

Procrastination is probably the number one reason even the top online business opportunities available fail. At the onset of your start up home based business, you will undoubtedly feel overwhelmed with everything you are expected to accomplish and get started. A top online business will help you stay on track until you have a comfortable understanding of your new business. If you are left on your own from day one, you will probably fail. That is why if you find a direct marketing opportunity that will guide you every step of the way, stick with them and you will become truly profitable.

Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!

The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
