Learning To Create Your Own Legitimate Home Based Business
When it comes to running a home business, you have two options, more or less. First, you can keep it all under the radar and make peanuts to supplement your income. If you're already making enough money at work and just want to make a little extra to put towards, say, home repairs, or going out to eat a little more often, that's all well and good, but if you want to replace your day job with your very own business and become financially independent, you need to do your homework so you can set up a LEGITIMATE home based business.
There really is a big difference between making some extra money on the side, and building a real business that you can use to build real wealth. Maybe, just maybe, you can JUST squeak by selling some stuff on auction sites and making sure you're not making enough to interest the IRS, but it's not a safe bet. If you want to make a living with your own business, there are three things you need to learn...
The Three L's: Licenses, Liability and Legality
You can get in some serious trouble if you're making six figures a year without the right licenses and permits. For example, depending on where you live, you might not even be able to store items you buy wholesale in your garage without making sure it's up to code for items that you hope to resell. You will need to make sure to do your research and make sure you have all the licenses and permits you need to get started, BEFORE you get started, and you need to look up what is and isn't legal to sell in your area, and where your customers might live.
Taxes
You need to know what sort of tax forms you need to fill out, whether or not you can even cover it with what you'll be making. Some businesses just aren't really worth it when you do it at a certain level. More than a few companies have had to go out of business because their tax and upkeep costs wound up being more than their incomes.
Expansion
Whenever you take the next step, take it carefully. Every single move towards expansion will need to be coupled with a whole new gauntlet of reeducation, research and paperwork. Nobody said it was easy. But, it CAN be easy once you get the education you need in order to do everything on the up and up. In the internet age, the big investment you make in your small business isn't money, but time.

If you want to learn how to really make the most of your home business, you need to get an education. You don't need to spend four years of your life at a business academy, but, you do need to seek out a little bit of guidance in order to really know what you're doing. There's a lot of opportunity out there, and a lot of potholes to trip yourself up on. It is entirely possible to wind up getting audited, paying steep fines, or even in jail because you missed just one step in your business plan, or because you couldn't tell the difference between legitimate online marketing and spam. You need to know every detail of your chosen industry, you need to know all about legality and liability, and you need to be dedicated enough to learn. Are you ready?

3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book
Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It?
- HI,
I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business.
It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need.
