No matter what area of expertise your website addresses you are more than likely going to face steep competition. With billions of websites operating every day, all over the world, businesses must find a way of separating themselves from their competitors. You can usually do so by making sure your content is high in both quality and originality. By doing so you can not only topple the competition but you can increase your traffic as well. One of the best pieces of advice afforded to online businesses is to remind them to update their sites constantly. Holidays, weekends, it does not matter. It is your job to provide a constant and steady stream of original articles and content. It is a valuable tool in ensuring that visitors will continue to patronize your site. The content should not only be clever and educational but clear and concise as well. Sloppy errors try the patience of your visitors and can prevent them from returning.

Take full advantage of search engine optimization devices. Scan your site for strong keywords, or rather words that rate high in search engine queries. If your site contains popular keywords it increases your odds of ranking high on search engine result pages. Remember you should not drastically alter your content in order to gain more keywords. The keywords that appear on your site should do so naturally.

You may wish to contemplate hiring a search engine optimization (SEO) expert to at least help you get started. They understand the inner workings of SEO and can seek out the small design flaws within your content. You would be surprised how many your traffic increases if your website ranking spikes.

In terms of SEO you should know that most search engines have a built-in preference for short articles. As was previously stated, you do not want to dramatically revise your content just for the sake of SEO, especially if doing so will make the content feel out of place on your own site. However small adjustments here and there, such as shortening long form content, can help increase your traffic numbers on any given day.

There are 2 very important things on your page: 1/ Page title: make sure to place some keywords in your title (avoid title like "welcome to my website, great information resource". You are wasting prime keyword real estate. 2/ Content. Content. Content. Content. Content. Oh, did I mention content?? Your content as to mention your main keywords several times. 3/ <h> and <b> tags are very important too. They tell search engines you emphasize these keywords.

Then comes the Content followed by the Friends and looks. Most of do social networking to attract traffic to their website(s) and as such the Content and Popularity of the site are important. btw, the list doesn't have digg or netscape or del.is.us which are the top social media sites.
Re: Alexa Ranking Goals - LOL, I spoke too soon. Within a few hours of my post, Alexa updated the Traffic Rank on the toolbar. Note however that the 3 month Traffic Rank on Alexa.com has still not been updated...
