1. Ensure that you have high quality content
The first thing that you need to do is to have good quality content. In the World Wide Web, content is the king. The only way in which you can do well and get good traffic is by having relevant content in your website.
Instead of going in for mediocre content which will only lead to a bad impression upon your website visitors, try to devote more time to your content and churn out high quality content.
2. Link exchanges.
Linking is a good old way of generating huge traffic to your website. It is a good way of promoting your website. In order to build up links, get in touch with website owners whose sites have content similar to yours. Once you identify such websites, contact their owners and exchange links. Through them, you will definitely be able to get hold of some relevant traffic.
3. Go for affiliates
Affiliate programs mean that you will hire individuals to promote your website or products. In exchange, you will have to pay them a certain percentage of your profits. There are many ways to pay your affiliates and you can choose any way that suits you. However, when hiring affiliates, ensure that the content on their pages is related to your website content.
4. Submitting to directories
In order to make your website more visible, submit it to popular directories like Open Directory Project and Zeal. I just changed one of my business goals from setting up a video site on Traffic-Geyser to:
"Set up a newsletter email series (let's say 10 messages) on Get Response..."
I reviewed Traffic Geyser in the latest episode of "David's Den" on my blog (see sig file), included an excellent video review of Traffic Geyser by John Detlif and decided against taking that particular project any further.
Still lots to get done!

- LOL, I spoke too soon. Within a few hours of my post, Alexa updated the Traffic Rank on the toolbar. Note however that the 3 month Traffic Rank on Alexa.com has still not been updated...
Re: e-Commerce and e-Payment providers
- When I came back to Japan in 1999 I sometimes used to ask my students if they would buy anything on the Internet and at that time most thought it was too risky. I'd encourage them to try by using well known sites such as Amazon.co.jp and also pointed out that using a credit card on a reputable site was safer than using it at a restaurant.
I can't remember the last time I had that discussion or when the "tipping point" occurred in Japan.
To answer your other question, I use Paypal for several reasons:
1. Brand familiarity
2. Easy to use
3. Free to withdraw 50,000yen+ to my Japanese bank account - a huge benefit (but maybe other systems also offer that...?)
4. Easy to cancel subscriptions
On the down side, their transaction fees are quite costly, they are difficult to contact and when disputes arise you can sometimes lose even when you can prove via your tracking service that the disputed item was "delivered" to the customer's address!
