Should Teaching Your Child Involve Longer School Days?

There has been much debate recently as to whether schooldays should be longer. Many feel that school days should be between 9 am and 5pm but would this really be beneficial?

There would certainly be some advantages to lengthening the school day.

For example with there being more working moms now than previously, having children in school for longer hours would certainly help to create a better work life balance for those mums. No more expensive childcare and the peace of mind of knowing that your child is safe and not roaming the streets in gangs.

Many also argue that having longer school hours would help to prepare children for when they have to work long hours in their working career.

One example of a country that has longer school hours, often up to twelve hours a day, is China. They have a compulsory 9 year schooling during which most children often spend more hours at school than their parents do at work. Many would also argue that the strict emphasis that both parents and the government place on educating children in China is the reason that their economy is so strong.

Having longer school days could also provide more time to allocate to non academic activities such as school choirs, orchestras and sports teams. Indeed many school s who do actually offer after school education, often excel in these activities.

However whilst longer school days would certainly help working mums, is it really fair that children’s education should consists of having to stay in school for more hours?

Already most school offer extracurricular activities for after school including sports activities that can help working parents but would having after school education involving more educational activities for children offer any real benefits?

Would it really equip children better for the outside working world? Let’s be honest people have always managed to adapt to working life without any problems in the past.

Another downside of staying in school for a longer day is that when the children finally have time to play after finishing their homework, they will either be too tired to play or there will no one to play with as all the other children will still be completing their homework too. Therefore their social life could suffer which could also affect their social skills and confidence in the future.

Also teaching your children for longer hours could result in many children becoming tired, especially when they become hungry and therefore lacking concentration to take in further knowledge.

All in all, in my opinion it that it is far better to keep the school day to its current hours. As previously mentioned there are currently many extra curriculum activities offered by most schools which can be taken advantage of by working moms or dads.

Also with working from home now being so popular and with many employers also now offering working parents more flexible working hours, it is becoming easier than ever to work around your children’s school hours.

It would be therefore be much better to ensure that the education programs for children instead, concentrate on equipping children with the knowledge that they need to know after they leave school. This should include financial advice such as how to manage their money including advice on mortgages, loans and pensions and also how to start a business, for those future budding entrepreneurs. After all many leading entrepreneurs did not perform very well academically and would therefore would certainly not have benefitted from longer school days but have nevertheless gone on to become extremely successful within business.

Sports is queen! Sports is queen! - About four years ago I started a webzine called The Thunder Child, devoted to science fiction and fantasy in all media. Growth was verrrrrrrrrrrrry slow at first, but has gradually picked up so that now I'm making a respectable income from my amazon.com and google adsense. (Well, from adsense, anyway. Amazon is a drop in the bucket compared to what adsense brings in.) Last year I put together a website showcasing the Tennessee Lady Vols (who won the NCAA championships last year), and just two weeks ago I put together a small website for Jacoby Ellsbury, a rookie outfielder for the Boston Red Sox - called a "phenom" and already very popular. The Lady Vols site has about 20 pages...the Ellsbury site has 5. Compared with The Thunder Child that, started out with about 20, and is now at about 1,000 and growing. Well, the hits on those two sports sites are more than three times what the hits on my Thunder Child site was during the first year of its existence. Since I've been a sports fan all my life, I reaaaaally wish that I'd started a sports webzine four years ago instead of this sci fi one, because I think my income now would be treble what it is. No doubt about it, sports rules!
Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? Re: Can someone explain Search engine optimization to me? - Search Engine Optimization (SEO) could be compared to a big popularity contest: A High School Computer Geek and a High School Football Captain who are trying to promote a party. The computer geek tells everyone in school & even hands out 100's of flyers about his party Friday night...what happens? his friends end up showing up and a few new people...even the new people leave right away because it is not what they are looking for. The High School Football Captain ends up just telling a few good buddies, and within hours the entire school not only knows about it, but everyone wants to come, and everyone does come & stay. One defenition of "optimize is "To make as perfect or effective as possibe." How effective are your article marketing campaigns? Could you be distributing content (that is what search engines index) more effectively? In a perfect world, who would you want promoting your website, web pages, and web content? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is determining this perfect & effective way to do this. Jeff
hosting more than one site on a domain? hosting more than one site on a domain? - I use ipower, because I like their file manager interface. (Although it is not as good as geocities - but they annoyed me and I'll never use them again.) Ipower does seem to outsource it's Help features to non-native-English speaking people, which can be annoying if you have problems, but although my site was down for a couple of days last year, for the most part I haven't had any problems where I need to deal with them. My question is... what about hosting more than one site on a single domain? My main domain is The Thunder Child, but I've purchased domain names for my two other web magazines, which I host under the Thunder Child umbrella. This way I'm only paying $100 a year for one site, plus $18 for my domain names, instead of paying $300 a year for individual sites. This makes sense to me, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any insights. Should websites have their own individual sites, expensive as that may be, or is "umbrella hosting" okay?
