What is prosperity to a middle aged man?

I often wonder "when will I actually feel my age?"

I am now what would be considered nearing middle age but the frustrating thing is that I still feel in my twenties.

True, when I look in the mirror my reflection shows a slightly more mature version of myself, what with the small bags under my eyes and the greying hair, but despite this my mind still remains young.

I can remember during my adolescent years my mum saying to me how frustrated she was that her body was ageing but that her mind still felt exactly the same as when she was younger. I can now empathise with her as I now feel the same way myself.

I can still remember school days like yesterday. I can recall all of the events and emotions of that time. Some 1970's tracks I hear on the radio can still take me back instantly to something that was relevant to that song at that time, whether it be a particular event or a memory of a girlfriend from that time. Oh yes it all feels like yesterday and yet I struggle to remember everyday things that I currently need to remember.

Thankfully there are also advantages to getting older- The main one being the wisdom gained along the way. Any mistakes or failures made during that time have helped to strengthen my resolve to go on to succeed. I have become a more confident person and my aspirations have also changed as I have got older to the ones that I had as a younger man.

In my youth I, like many other young people, wanted the usual materialistic things like a nice car, a big house and money in the bank, all of which I was fortunate enough to acquire.

However in order to achieve these things I paid the ultimate sacrifice- namely working too hard and not spending enough time with my family. My oldest children who are now twenty one and seventeen grew up within the blink of an eye. I lost a lot of their childhood years because of striving to accomplish my goals.

I have however been fortunate enough to have two more children who are now aged eight and six. The mistakes of the past have made me wiser this time around and I have learnt to prioritise my time more effectively. I still have ambition and I still strive to succeed but I have modified my goals in order to achieve the most important commodity of all which is time.

Getting older has made me evaluate what true prosperity is in life namely having a healthy balance between family and working life. I still continue to work to live a comfortable lifestyle but I limit my working hours in order to be able to spend time enjoying life with my family and the rewards that brings far outweigh the financial ones.

I have spent over twenty years in business striving to achieve my career goals and to achieve perfect prosperity for myself and my family and now I am finally fortunate enough to have found the right opportunityto succeed. I currently run a business working from home which enables me to balance my family and working life perfectly. I can choose the hours that I want to work and I no longer have to consider other people's needs over that of my family. I am also able to enjoy going to my children's school concerts or enjoy some leisure time with my wife at short notice. This to me is true prosperity.

Frumpy or sleek? The wrong face drives away customers Frumpy or sleek? The wrong face drives away customers - I've got a Discovery News Feed on my Google Desktop, and every morning I usually click on one or two headlines. The first time I do this, I'm always brought to a "splash page" or "ad page" or whatever it's called, in which a frumpy woman (middle aged, bad hair cut - or just on a bad hair day, pinny over her dress, clutching a few papers and smiling) is juxtaposed over some ad about the dangers of high cholesterol and what to do about it. Now, I am a feminist, and I see no reason why middle aged women should have to primp and preen and watch their weight (any more than younger women should) and that these women can advertise anything just as well as anybody else...but the fact remains that I pay no attention to this ad because this "face" simply doesn't inspire confidence as someone who would know anything about cholesterol. It's "just" a housewife. Put the same woman - same expression and everything - in a white lab coat and I might pay more attention to her. Have this woman as she now is trying to sell chocolate cake or something like that, and I'd pay attention to her. But as it is, the image doesn't inspire confidence in the message.
Vista retrenching Vista retrenching - I sat through so much football yesterday that I might be mis-remembering this, but I'm pretty sure I saw one of those Mac-PC commercials (the one where the Mac guy is all young, trendy and slender, while the PC guy is middle aged, fat and gawky...) where Mac pointed out that PC was "re-trenching" from Vista ...if they say that on national TV I'm assuming that quite a few peope don't like Vista.
Re: Still Not Sure Who To Vote For? Re: Still Not Sure Who To Vote For? -
I don't need no software to tell me who to vote for if I am in America. Obama is my man any day. Not because I am black, but because he is young, enrgetic and resourceful[/quote:1j77tiy7] I'm a middle-aged white guy voting for Obama. He's highly intelligent and the dynamic leader we now need to lead us through the economic turmoil. He has the potential to be another great like JFK.
Re: 3 Business Lessons from Henry Heinz Re: 3 Business Lessons from Henry Heinz - Hi Evan, Thanks for a brilliant and inspirational article. I knew he was a great man but I didn’t realise what a humble background he came from and what a focused and hard working young boy he must have been to have such a clear vision of where he was going. Over here in the 60’s I had first hand knowledge as a boy of how effective a slogan can be which was for Heinz baked beans which are very popular in all households and it went “A million housewives every day pick up a tin of beans and say, BEANS MEANZ HEINZ”. It was set to music but was so popular that children would sing it every day and such was it’s success that every middle aged man or women in the UK today can tell you that slogan without even having to think about it, pure genius. regards, Mal.
Choice of Logos Choice of Logos - Hi Mark, I prefer the middle one as the main version, with white lettering and yellow dots. The others can be variations for use when the middle one is not as readable, or too expensive for multicolour printing. To me the middle one is the strongest, although it is not as extreme as the one with the black letters. I consider the one with the black lettering to be the most aggressive version. Use all three, each one where most appropriate because of target audience or cost. Andreas
