How to Set Up a Squidoo Account in 15 Minutes

How to Set Up a Squidoo Account in 15 Minutes

First here is a brief history of Squidoo; Squidoo is a community website that allows users to create pages (called lenses) on really any subject they desire. Squidoo is one of the top 500 websites visited in the world and in the top 300 in the United States. Squidoo grew roughly 91% in 2008 and had roughly 9000,000 lenses published on its site by Feb. 1st 2009.

Squidoo started in 2005 in beta around October in 2005; two months after starting they went live and had roughly 100,000 lenses in the first 6 months.

Follow the directions below and you will see How to Set up a Squidoo account in 15 minutes:

- Go to Squidoo.com

- I would recommend reading "What's Squidoo" at the top of the page as it is very informative

- Click on the box on the main page that says "Sign Up"

- Insert your email address, it is ok to use your everyday email as I have had a Squidoo account for awhile and they are great about not spamming you with content or products.

- Pick a user name, if you are going to use Squidoo to help your marketing or to brand yourself, it's a good idea to use the same name you are for Facebook, YouTube, Linked In, Twitter, your website or blog or any other accounts you have set up for this purpose. You will definitely prosper for using Squidoo as the Search engines love Squidoo because it is a Web 2.0 application.

- Insert a password; I have found many people that use the same password for many accounts since they have so many different online, this allows them to remember it easier.

- Check "Terms of Service" this means you need to be nice and considerate of others

- Check "Yes, I want to receive The Lens of the Day" this will be very beneficial for you upfront as you will be able to see others work quickly and see some of the awesome things you can do with Squidoo. This will help you learn faster.

- Enter the word on the left, this is to validate you aren't a robot.

- Hit Continue

- Once you receive the "Welcome To Squidoo" page, it's not a bad idea to look at the bottom of the page in the middle box that shows the "Squidoo Top 100", check out the work of others, this gives you an idea again of what is possible!

- Once you are done looking at lenses head up to the top that says "Create Your Own Lens""Go"

-This is where it gets fun, Step # 1

What is your Lens About? An example is "The Best Time to go Shopping"

Step #2

Pick a goal for your lens, just remember this is your first lens, it doesn't have to be perfect, and most people pick the top option the first few times. The more lenses you make the better you will become, just as I have!

Step #3

Create a Title and URL; I always make my Title and URL the same, this makes it easier for Search Engines to pick up your content and you will get ranked higher. When you insert your URL make sure there are not spaces in between (example: "thebestimetogoshopping") or the URL will not work, if you make a oops, they will let you know. Next pick a category, luckily there was one for "shopping", then rate it. I would recommend only adding G content as once it's online, it's FOREVER!

Step # 4

Tag your page so people can find it, again your title and tag should be the same, and then input the word on the left then click "Build My Lens"

You will also want to complete the following:

Click on "My Dashboard" and click on My Profile, insert a bio ( this really is also Social Networking), also upload a picture of yourself, preferably you smiling or having a good time, just make sure it's a good picture and tasteful. One of the phenomenal things also about Squidoo is that you can add slots to your page from websites like You Tube, Amazon, Ebay and others that you can get paid for make sure you fill that area out!

At the very bottom you can set up a link to your Twitter and Facebook account, this will allow you to send updates straight to those accounts, again like I said this is Social Networking.

Is Squidoo an effective tool for you? - When Squidoo first came out I signed up a few lenses to promote some of the activities I was up on on my site and showcase some of the famous entrepreneurs we had featured. I found that it did not generate a lot of traffic and I stopped investing the time. Now I'm reading more and more about spammers taking over Squidoo to create landing pages and they have decreased the quality of content on the site. Has anyone had success using Squidoo?

Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategies - It's funny to come across the phrase "don't put all your eggs in one basket" on the first thread I check out - after seeing the exact phrase on a blog about Squidoo's policy changes last year. If you rely on a single strategy - such as, for example, building multiple Squidoo lenses about your affiliate programs, you are effectively at the mercy of the managers of Squidoo. They brought in a much stricter policy about links and spam last year, a lot of lenses were shut down. Even with web hosting it probably makes sense not to rely on a single website or a single web host. What are members' thoughts on the number of marketing methods to employ, and in what percentages? In my case, for one of my games sites, it would be approximately: 1. Website seo, keywords and unique content 40% 2. Blog 25% 3. Forum 15% 4. Article marketing 10% 5. Squidoo 5% 6. Twitter & Facebook 4% 7. Broadcasting to my list - 1% (This needs to be built up...)
Re: Teens make $$ on Squidoo - I make a residual income from Squidoo, and some of it I give to charity. But I never made lenses for that reason, more for a wider promotion strategy. In all honesty I don't think squidoo is the best strategy for making money online, since Squidoo takes a big chunk of your earnings and you don't have 100% control of your content. The advantage is your pages have some ranking power out of the bag, but with consistent effort you could have your own site which ranks. If you want to make $500/mo from Squidoo you'd need between 100-1000 quality lenses (depending on niche and aff. comissions), be specifically promoting a good product using your own affiliate links, and do a little bit of promotion to your lenses and profile. A keyword juicy title for your lenses is also a must so do some keyword research and go for LONGTAIL. I recommend you also create your own site and link the squidoo lenses to that, and also incorporate other authority sites where you can publish content like ezinearticles and hubpages.
Viral Marketing With Squidoo - Another effective viral marketing strategy is to take advantage of Squidoo. Make a page - actually, make several pages - related to your main business. The great thing with Squidoo is that you can post your affiliate links. Next, start browsing other people's pages, award the good ones with four or five stars, and post a comment on them. Some of these people will reciprocate, and that will push you up the rankings. Also, some of the other people who visit their pages will see your link and click through to view your pages - especially if you leave an interesting comment, I guess.
