Why Using Twitter Can Drive More Traffic to Your Business

Twitter is a free social networking and micro blogging program that allows users to send and reads posts that are called "tweets". Tweets are posts that have 140 characters or less and once sent go out to their followers, in which many individuals have more than 100 hundred thousand followers.

In early 2006 Jack Dorsey created Twitter when he was brainstorming with a group of board members to relight their business known as Odeo. It was initially used internally by employees but went public and into a full scale version in July 2006. Twitter later in April of 2007 spun off and later became its own company. Twitter got its major jumpstart during the South to Southwest festival in 2007, during this festival the tweets went from 20,000 per day to 60,000 per day.

Twitter is currently ranked as 1 of 50 most popular websites in the world. One report done in February of 2009 ranked Twitter as the third most used social network based on 6 million visitors and individuals that tweeted 55 million times. In March 2009, Twitter was ranked as the fastest growing social networking site in the Members Community for February 2009 in which they grew 1382 percent, to where Zimbio grew 240 pct and Facebook grew 228 percent. Most of the growth came from more mature adults that had never really got involved with social networking, and surprisingly enough the age group of 12 to 17 only accounted for roughly 11 percent. In knowing this depending on what your business is and who it caters to, this could be a phenomenal advantage.

In June 2008 nearly two thirds of all Twitter users were in the United States, while the U.K. and Canada were a close second and third. As social networking sites have evolved over the last couple years you can link them all together to where you can tweet a message or a sales pitch and hit post on your other networking sites you may be affiliated with. Some great examples of these popular sites include, Eons.com, Facebook, My Space, Flickr, LinkedIn, Bebo, Friendster, hi5, Orkut and Perfspot just to name a few.

In July 2009 a group called Twicco.jp which is currently only available in Japan was formed by Twitter Japan and Digital Garage. This group and community feature puts ads in the news feeds, which goes out to millions of followers.

In October 2009 the tweets has risen to an astonishing 26 million per day and at the end of 2009 there has been reported that there are 18 million users worldwide. This is why it is so important that if you are in Internet Marketing and own your own Internet Business you have got to really learn how Twitter works and how it can help your business.

Roughly seventeen years ago I began my career into retail, and had been with the same major retailer for the past fourteen years. Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I use Facebook pages for Business and rarely ever use Twitter. I hace lost count of the no. of Hotels that I have visited, regarding their marketing campaigns, that may have 5k Facebook Fans and only 100 followers on Twitter. It is a lot more difficult to engage with people on Twitter and thus harder to gain traction. If you are a business like Nike, then Twitter is great, but if you are an SME, then focus on Facebook or LinkedIn (if you are providing a professional service.) You can always have your Facebook feed directly in to Twitter, so you can have a presence on both, but do the work on one. Also check out ping.fm for managing campaigns - it is a free tool, and a great time saver.

I just changed one of my business goals from setting up a video site on Traffic-Geyser to: "Set up a newsletter email series (let's say 10 messages) on Get Response..." I reviewed Traffic Geyser in the latest episode of "David's Den" on my blog (see sig file), included an excellent video review of Traffic Geyser by John Detlif and decided against taking that particular project any further. Still lots to get done!

Traffic is very minimal as you said, and I doubt that I'll ever make money with it unless I start getting paid to Tweet, and even then I'm not sure if that's worth it. Haven't looked into that yet, but it's definitely not even close to my main method of marketing for my business.
