Most email mailing lists are built by giving away some kind of free gift as an incentive to encourage website visitors to subscribe by filling in an online form with their name and email address. For that reason, most lists are stuffed with freebie seekers who may not be interested in paying good money for your products or services.
If you are not careful, a list of freebie seekers can be a waste of both time and money. But, do not despair! The good news is that you can still make money from a list that is full of "freebie seekers" if you go about things in the right way.
For one thing, experienced mailing list marketers are agreed that if you work on building a relationship with your list of free subscribers, it IS possible to convert a lot of freebie seekers into buyers over time. Persistence is the key. Your long term aim should be to develop a relationship based on trust and recognition with every single name on your mailing list.
However, building a long term relationship need not stop you from profiting in the short term - even with freebie seekers. The key is to apply what you know about your mailing list subscribers. You already know that if you offer them something for free, they are likely to take it.
So here are three ways you can profit from freebie seekers in the short term, while turning them into paying customers in the long term.
Short term freebie profit strategy #1: Send Them to the Right Place
Direct your freebie seekers to a page that is correctly monetized. Instead of posting all of your content inside your email, post just enough content to arouse their curiosity. Then include a link to a page that has adsense ads. If you don't want to clutter your page with adsense or other PPC publisher alternatives, then you can sell ad space. Your page will have a lot viewers from your list and you can monetize that by selling ad space. In short, send the freebie seekers to a place where you can make some money from them, even without trying to sell them anything.
Short term freebie profit strategy #2: Lead Generation List Sharing
There are many other list owners or other lead generation options that can make your email marketing campaign profitable. In this case, you can introduce your freebie seekers to a promotion that is offering something for free. When your freebie seekers sign up, you get paid for every lead that you create. While you will often get only a few dollars per lead, this can quickly add up.
Short term freebie profit strategy #3: Domain Flipping
This is a seldom used tactic which can be quite successful. One of the keys to domain or website flipping is to find a domain that has a good source of already-existing traffic. You can set up a website that offers a free ebook, it can even be a free ebook that you were going to give to your list anyways. By doing this several times over the period of a month or two, your website traffic can skyrocket. You can then sell your domain for a higher price. Most domain/website auction sites require 30, 60, or 90 days of traffic history, so plan accordingly.
Email marketing to a list full of freebie seekers can be profitable if you work with the character of your list and not against it. The way to do that is to appeal to the desire of freebie seekers to get something for nothing and then set things up so that you profit from that desire. Once you have done this, your email marketing campaign can be much more successful and profitable, both in the short and long term.
