4 Popular Dietary Myths Debunked
We all know that we are living in a diet conscious world. The lemon detox diet, acai berry diet to name just a few. Personally I don't subscribe to any form of these commercially well-recognized diets. Apart from having all these fancy diet programs, there appears to be myths associated with eating certain foods. To name a few, all saturated fats raise blood cholesterol and only red wine is good for the heart.
This articles serves to debunk 4 popular dietary myths:
1. Eating too many eggs will raise blood cholesterol levels
I am sure you must have heard of this. The reality is that eggs contain very little saturated fats. Saturated fats are the kind of fat that contributes to your cholesterol levels. And mind you not all saturated fats are bad. I will explain this in a future article.
In a recent research to study the effects of daily eggs consumption to cholesterol levels, contribution towards lipid levels and heart disease is highly unlikely. It doesn't matter what sort of egg you consume. The bottom-line is eggs will not increase your risk of any cardiovascular disease.
2. Only Red Wine is Good For Your Heart
Most people believe that red wine is good for the heart because of the antioxidant content present in them. Although antioxidant does have a protective effect for your heart, alcohol also helps to reduce heart attacks. In fact any alcohol beverage drank in moderation is a key to a healthy heart.
I'm not exactly promoting anyone to be an alcoholic. The general consensus of alcohol drank in moderation is a max of 2 standard drinks for females and 4 standard drinks for males a day. One standard drink is equivalent to 1 can of beer a day.
3. Cooked Olive Oil Will Destroy Its Health Benefits
Olive oil is the healthiest oils around for consumption. The best is extra virgin olive oil. And sure, they fetch a high price in supermarkets but there are not priced as such without reason. Cooked olive oil does not in any way denature its chemical properties making it unsafe for consumption. Olive oils are basically mono-unsaturated fat and yes they are one of the healthiest around and relatively stable at high temperatures.
As long as oil is not cooked beyond its smoking point, olive oils cooked at high temperatures are safe for consumption while still preserving its health benefits.
4. Organic Foods Are More Nutritious
Many people have this misconception that organic foods say for instance live stock allowed to roam about freely in the open compared to caged animals are more nutritious because the way they were bred or fed. You would not say that this is a nonsensical conclusion but the reality is although they may be healthier the nutritional content is relatively the same.
A large study was carried out recently to elucidate this common notion. And the conclusion is that there is no significant difference in nutritional content between conventional foods compared to organic live stock
I hope this article helps clear the air on popular dietary myths.
