Organic Link Building - Three Important Tips That Your Must Remember

Organic Link Building - Three Important Tips That Your Must Remember

Link building is probably one of the most important areas to focus on when aiming to boost your website rankings. Most would agree that the more backlinks you have, the better your rankings will be but this is not truly the case if you were to analyse websites in the first page of any search engine. Often, you will find that a higher ranking site has fewer backlinks than websites below it. Search engines focus more on quality backlinks rather than the quantity of backlinks pointing to a particular website. This article serves to explain three areas that you must remember while building quality links

1. Anchor Links or Link Descriptions in the Right Neighbourhood

Link farms are websites filled with nothing but links that lead to no specific site. It makes things worse when your links are placed in websites that have outgoing links to adult sites, gambling sites, casino or hacking websites. You would most certainly be de-indexed by Google within a matter of time if not yet. These websites offer no value to search engines and neither to your human visitors.

Even if your links are not placed in bad websites as mentioned above, placing link descriptions or anchor links in a totally irrelevant website or "spammy" looking websites are also frown upon by search engines.

A few good places to place your anchor texts or link descriptions would be:

• Social Websites

• Relevant Forums to your website

• Relevant Blogs to your website

2. Link Anchor Texts / Link Descriptions- Make It Natural

When you are using anchor texts in your link, make it look natural. Do not repeatedly use the same anchor text for a specific link. The reason behind this is actually quite simple. Imagine having to search for a particular phrase say "smoking cessation"; you would not want all your links to have "smoking cessation" in your anchor texts. I am not saying that you should stop using smoking cessation as a theme but vary your anchor text. An example would be:

"steps in smoking cessation"

"ways to stop smoking successfully"

"important steps to stop smoking"

"how to stop smoking successfully"

The possibilities are literally endless. As long as you are willing to use different anchor texts you would not be penalised by search engines.

Again I want to emphasize, having variations in your anchor texts would also make your link building more natural to search engines and thus improve your website rankings.

This also applies to link descriptions. When you are offered the opportunity to exchange links, remember to vary your link descriptions. Make an effort to write different link descriptions which will benefit not only your visitors but also look more natural to your search engines.

3. Build Your Links Gradually

It is undeniable that link building is an important part of website ranking. Building your links at a rate of hundreds or thousands of links overnight most certainly does not look natural. You are not thinking of setting up another Facebook or Scribd overnight. Whatever the intention of building your website is, grow your links gradually but consistently. A rate of about 20 a week would be a nice number to stick to.

At that rate, you would be able to get 7300 links, but of course you can increase that amount providing that you don't build links excessively until it appears unnatural to search engines.

Building backlinks can be a long and tiring process but if done correctly and consistently, you will reap the rewards for your efforts.

The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
