Overcoming Stress In 5 Simple Ways

We all have different situations that can trigger stress from our environment. In our fast pace ever changing global environment, stress has become and increasing common situation in our daily lifestyle. Sometimes stressors originate from personal or family problems. It can also be related to health or vice versa. A stressful living environment can have detrimental effects to your personal health. It certainly is not easy overcoming stress. This article discusses 5 key important ways in overcoming stress.

1. Reaching Out To Others

Reaching out to others is a very important way to share you frustrations and the broil of emotions that would be a result of stress. You might have been recently retrenched or failed your finals. Emotions can cloud your thinking and can lead to unnecessary adaptations to stress such as drinking, wallowing in sorrow, or worse drugs. Whatever the reasons are, talking out to others and having a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on can work wonders for your emotional well-being.

2. Mourn and Grief

It is also important to realize that putting thoughts or negative events at the back of your head is a maladaption towards overcoming stress. To stress this further, there is nothing wrong being in the process of grief. As with all grieving processes there are 5 stages which are anger, denial, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Going through each of this stage is a normal process for everyone. But being in one stage for example depression for a long time is pathological and if you find yourself in this situation seek help.

Combining the grieving process and social support as mentioned in my first point, helps you deal with stress even more effectively.

3. Adjust Your Attitude

If you have noticed, your mind is the main driving force of your everyday life. Have you heard of the saying, "Whatever a man thinketh, so is he"? Telling yourself that you will never find a job or you will never get through university is counter-productive and sets you up for failure and despair.

Instead whatever the stressful situation is, adopt a more positive mindset. Of course this is easier said than done but the first step towards moving on from a stressful situation is to adopt an attitude of abundance.

4. Analyze and Correct Yourself

This might sound technical but essentially what it means is to figure out what went wrong and find a way to correct yourself. In fact, before you get into this stage you must adopt a positive attitude first as mentioned earlier. Sometimes losing a job or failing an exam could be a time to reflect on self-improvement and self evaluation. Have you been putting enough hours into your studies? Have you been studying effectively? Have you also been diligent enough at your workplace?

The reasons could be many but it is your job to find out what went wrong. Managing stress without having a planned course of action will set you up for another round of disappointment and failure. AS the saying goes, do not let history repeat itself.

5. A Fresh Start

For all your know, having a failed relationship or losing your job could be an indication of better things to come. Sometimes all you have to do is to look at it in a different way. Losing the job that you had for ten years could be a stepping stone towards greener pastures in different companies or areas. You might have received job offers from other companies before but declined them because your existing job promises career advancement. Life is always a series of ups and downs. Seeing a negative event happening in your life is not an indication of future failures.

To summarize, stress is neither a bad or good thing. To illustrate this difference, stress can be short or long term. Short term stress is beneficial as it helps us deal with difficult situations that can make us stronger and enable us to handle similar stressful situations again. Long term stress or chronic stress is detrimental not only mentally and emotionally but also physically. If you find yourself in this situation I hope my 5 ways in overcoming stress will help you.

Sincerely,

Bryan Wong YH
