From Spam to Inbox – Creating Curiosity is the Key

E-mail marketing has become imperative to online promotional strategies. It is a great way to enhance your online presence and, of course, sales. Not only does it help a webmaster to sell his products online, it also helps build a trustworthy relationship with the clients. Lately, internet marketing has become a crowded place with every ‘Joe’ trying to entice customers. As such, it doesn’t take long for your mail to be labeled spam.

So, what does it take to be added as a contact in a person’s mailing list, or at least, get your mail opened? The answer - creating curiosity filled titles. The prime aim of an e-mail title line is to tempt the potential reader to click open the mail. A well thought-out, eye catching subject line increases the chances of message being clicked and read. The curiosity factor allures a reader to click and read the contents of the mail.

The saying ‘curiosity kills the cat’ very well sums up the human innate trait to explore. Human brains are geared towards seeking the unknown and can barely resist the pursuit of knowledge. A curiosity laden subject line will urge your visitors to click on the link and satisfy their inquisitiveness. This is enough to serve the purpose i.e. get your mail opened. Further, if the content of your email matches their interest, they’ll continue reading. The more they read, the more likely they are to purchase your products.

Here are some of the lines you can try:

1. .... – The four dots is a universal curiosity builder expression. Write your subject line and leave four dots in the end to make it incomplete. The sense of incompleteness or asymmetry increases the curiosity quotient. For e.g. “what an amazing....”Why would someone not click on it?

2. A Provocative Question
: A question immediately sends a reader into a state of thinking and compels him to provide an answer to you. You can ask about his desires or explain your own experiences through a question. For e.g. if I am selling weight loss products, I can pose a question, “How I was able to lose weight in just 3 weeks?”

3. The Free Product/Benefit: Offer a free product or a discount on your product and let it shine brightly in the subject line. People love free handouts or want to try out your product’s sample before buying. By offering a glimpse of your product, you’re increasing their itch to get more of it. For e.g. “Free Online Marketing Course worth $250” is a compelling line.

Leave your visitors wanting more. However, remember to insert ‘a call to action’ in the content or in the subject line, if possible. Let them feel that their curiosity can be satisfied by visiting your website or purchasing your product. Contrary to the perception, email marketing is very much alive. Creating curiosity in your title is the key. If you disregard this fact, then be prepared to be labeled spam.

Re: A lot of electronics spam today! Re: A lot of electronics spam today! - Haha... great thread here, guys. Nice name, Michelle, I think that would suit very well. I wonder just how many websites and forums could benefit from a service like this. Anyone ever look into it? Spam is a serious problem for many, many people. I imagine there are those who would be willing to pay for a service to get rid of the never-ending nightmare.
I developed a personal tool I developed a personal tool - Institute for Marketecology, the flood of gets rich quick schemes and Spam has made a lot of people equate the term with unethical behavior. Fortunately, there are plenty ethical people out there using honest Internet marketing techniques to counteract this.
Don't they know there are spammers out there? Don't they know there are spammers out there? - Just a rant.... I have a spam filter on my email, such that every day probably about 20 or more emails a day end up in my Bulk folder and I don't even see them. But I still see dozens of spam messages a day in my Inbox, and I recognize them by their titles, if they just say, "Hello," or "Hi" or some other generic title, I know it's spam and I just delete it without even opening it - as you must do. Today I got an email from someone, and the title was "wff". Just that. Not even capital letters. Normally I would have just deleted it without reading it, but fortunately I saw the name of the author, and it was a name I recognized, not a friend but an acquaintance - someone who works for the Williamsburg Film Festival. And the title "wff" was of course Williamsburg Film Festival. And I wonder how many businesses send out emails to potential customers with generic subject lines so that their stuff gets sent to the Trash file without even being looked at.
