How To Discover Your True Talents

How To Discover Your True Talents

After my book, Your Dream: God’s Plan, was published, I was surprised and amazed by one question readers kept asking. It usually went something like this:

“Matt, I really enjoyed your book, (a compliment I can never hear enough!), but I’m not sure I have any talents. How can I find out what mine are?”

At first, that question absolutely floored me. I had just spent the last several months of my life indulging my talents and exercising my dreams that it hadn’t occurred to me that people wouldn’t be aware of theirs, but since so many people were asking the same question, I determined to give it some deeper thought. The simple answers hit me like a truck: people who don’t know their talents don’t know them because:

• They may be too close to them to see them - The very nature of a talent is that it comes easy; so easy that it often gets overlooked.
• They have never given it any thought - People don’t know the right questions to ask and, if they do, may not be satisfied with the answer.
• They think talents have to be sexy - Talents like great singing voices, athletic ability or acting are so highly valued in our society that people without such talents don’t think their special gifts measure up.

First, let’s get one thing straight. Your talents, however small they may appear to you, are a unique and precious gift from God. They are worthy of your value, attention and commitment!

Now that we’ve established that, here are a few questions you can ask to get you started on your unique talent assessment:

• Do you do something well without much effort?
• Do you do something with ease that others find difficult?
• Is there something you do that makes time fly by too quickly?
• Do you receive compliments for being exceptionally good at something?
• Is there something you do that gives you transcendent joy?
• Do you do something well that you see others getting paid to do?
• Do you do something that makes you feel closer to God?

These questions could go on, but you get the general idea. Your talents do not have to be “huge” in the world’s eyes. If your passion is for teaching and you do it well, there it is! A great and valuable talent! If you are great at administration, let your talent shine in your workplace for the improvement of the organization. If you love math (like my wife does), how about becoming a math tutor? What a gift you could give to those of us who need to be better with that skill!

If you learn to recognize, practice and improve them, your talents, whatever they may be, have great value. Never minimize how your unique talents can improve the world around you. Commit to know and share yours and watch how the world opens up to you.

Re: Web Idea - Hi Som, Welcome aboard. Almost everything that I can add is already mentioned by the ever-active, respected members of the Forum. But I would like to bring it to your attention that whenever we have our idea and nurture it for long, it becomes something like our baby and we are all possessive about that. True. Now the question is that as we are mostly possessive of our idea how far can we go about it? I mean, you say your idea is fresh as morning coffee. True to you but have you researched and actually tried to find out the feasibility part of it? I have also been a programmer and as such I feel that many of the ideas that we have generally look seemingly better in book but when it comes to reality, there is a difference. So I would recommend you to re-consider the idea. Not as Som but as someone who is a client of the idea. Please step into the shoes and find out whether you would go for the product as a client! If yes, then lets start with doing a market research and the follow up with the other formalities. Reason being that its getting late and the Coffee may lose its freshness! Good Luck,

Re: Can Google Alerts Increase Your Search Engine Rankings? - True enough, google alerts can help you a lot in SEO. Like what you said, it is a very wonderful tool that can increase the search engine traffic of your site, but of course like everything else, you need to utilize it properly in the first place.
