In my first posting on this topic, we identified what a daily creativity window really is and how you can easily discover yours. In this segment, I’ll help you learn how to open that window a little wider, keep it open longer and how to get the most out of it while it is.
First, let’s talk benefits. Learning when you’re most creative and how to take advantage of that window of opportunity will help you in more ways than you can count. That said, the most obvious include:
- Enhanced mental health - When you give your mind the creative outlet it craves, you are exercising it for greater and greater things.
- Confidence - when you give importance to your creative capacity, your confidence naturally builds.
- Attraction - creativity is attractive and inspiring to those around you.
- A Brighter Outlook - when you allow your creativity and your talents to flourish, you can feel yourself starting to live again. Your dreams are revived and your daily satisfaction and anticipation for tomorrow is invigorated.
Now a little medicine. If you truly want to unearth the benefits of this powerful discovery, I suggest you fertilize the soil of your mind. Heres how:
- It starts with exercise -If you’re not bathing your brain in oxygen and strengthening your heart and muscles, your creativity window will be small and will close quickly.
- Reduce sugar intake -Folks, there’s no one out there who likes sweets more than I do (particularly chocolate-chip cookies), but if you want your creativity window to be open wide, you must reduce sugar intake in all its forms. Yes that includes diet soda, starchy processed chips and crackers and sugary coffee drinks, (even if they use that sugar-free substitute).
- Minimize alcohol -I like a beer or glass of wine from time to time, and I don’t believe moderate alcohol consumption is a horrible thing, but we might as well say it: excessive alcohol (and of course drugs) are creativity killers.
With that uncomfortable discussion behind us, let’s talk about how to fully exploit your creativity window.
- Seize the moment - When your creativity window opens, give it your full attention and DO that think you do best right then and there.
- Avoid all distractions - Turn off the phone, let those pesky emails wait awhile, close your door, politely tell those people who want to interrupt you that you’ll get right back to them shortly, and if your creativity window happens to occur in the evening, avoid that major time sucker, the television, at all cost.
- Change your schedule to accommodate - If you’re able, try to make your creativity window (or at least a portion of it) a daily appointment and hold to it religiously.
- Challenge yourself to DO, not to rationalize-I like to write, but if I don’t set aside time to WRITE, I never get around to it. Simple as that.
I see my creativity window as a daily gift from my Creator; a time when I get to fully indulge my passion and talents for my gratification and, hopefully, to help others be better themselves. Consider your creativity window as a gift from God and, believe me, you’ll give it a lot more weight and attention in your life. When you do, just watch how you begin to soar.
