Do your own thinking, Don’t let others do it for you
Have you come across a situation
where in you wanted to do one thing, but you ended up doing just the opposite
just to please somebody else? I happened to come across one recently, and this
time instead of being a victim, I decided to be a victor and corrected it. Read
on to find out how.
A couple of days back I walked
into a convenience store to pick up some food. I happened to zero in on a
Chicken Fajita that was of a different brand than the usual. Assuming that the
price might be similar to the rest, I picked it up and took it to the counter.
To my rude shock the counter lady bagged it and told me to fork out 3 times my
assumed price. Even though my insides were telling ‘No Way’, my fingers dipped
into my wallet and dished the cash out. I walked out of the store angry with
myself and feeling down about my decision. As I sat looking at the fajita, I
asked myself – why didn’t I decline it? Why did I have to pay 3 times as much
something that I didn’t fancy at all? Then it dawned on me that I did it to please
others and to avoid the situation on ‘What would the counter lady or the people
in the queue behind think about me?’. James Matthew Barries said, “The life of
every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another.”
If you are not any different, you
would have gone through a similar experience many times over. You know how it
feels to pretend to be somebody else. And it’s not good. This incident did eat
me up inside for a day or two, but then I decided to correct it and not just let
it slide. So what did I do?
I went back into another
convenience store and picked up the same chicken fajita and placed it on the
counter. But this time the intention was to practice a ‘NO’. As the counter
lady bagged it I acted surprised by the price and told her to cancel the
purchase as it was above my budget. The moment the last syllable of that
sentence was said, my heart became a ton lighter. I felt euphoric at learning
to say ‘NO’. I walked out of that store head held high, chest expanded, feeling
confident and above me ‘being me’.
Raymond Hull said, “He who trims
himself to suit everyone will soon whittle himself away.”
My advice to you is this. If you
are being held back by this handicap about what others might think of me, go to
a convenience store near you and try out what I did. I am not kidding – do it a
couple of times and see what changes it brings about in you. It will make you
stand taller and sturdier.
Always be a first-rate version of
yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else. ~ Judy
Garland
God Bless.
