How to find topics for Articles – Beating writer’s block

There is not a single week that passes by without me having to ponder over what topic to write about in my article, or what should I blog about, or what information do I share. I encounter this dilemma called the ‘Writer’s Block’ every time and I manage to get through it every time too. This article will show you how.

And I am not the only one who goes this phase. All bloggers, Internet marketers, authors do too. I have heard this question time and again on how to find topics to write about, whether it is a blog or article or press release or a video. You will find the answer here. Before I go and tell you my 3 techniques for beating writer’s block, let me explain a bit on how your brain works. Unlike a grocery store which manages stock on FIFO (First In First Out) basis, your brain manages it’s stock (information) on LIFO (Last In First Out) basis. The information that comes out of your brain is greatly influenced by the last thing that went into it. For e.g. If you are mad over something, you take that anger out on an innocent victim. You certainly did not mean to, but your brain didn’t let you either. Imagine this: You come out of sleep and sit in front of your computer to write an article. What do you think will happen? Of course, you wouldn’t know what to write about because the last thing that went in was sleep, so all you will get out is sleep. So in order to get valuable information out of your brain, you have to feed it with valuable information first. The 3 techniques that I use is based on changing this ‘last in’ part of the equation.

Technique #1: Draw from your day’s experience. Every day teaches you a valuable lesson. All you have to do is reminisce how you day passed and what lessons you have learnt today. Search for the one that inspired you the most, or touched you the most. Once you find that piece of experience, just expand on it in your own word. Valerie Sherwood said it brilliantly, "Don’t write what you know—what you know may bore you, and thus bore your readers. Write about what interests you—and interests you deeply—and your readers will catch fire at your words."

Technique #2: Read a book. If I don’t have any valuable lesson in my day’s experience, then I pick up a book and start reading. Once I have read for 10 to 15 minutes, I get enough information that I feel is valuable to share with the world. Read something that interests you deeply, and not just for the sake of reading something. Barbara Kingsolver said, “Don't try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say.” Remember, people are not interested in ‘what’ you say; they are interested in ‘why’ you say ‘what’ you say.

Technique #3: Draw from the Bible. Or any religious book for that matter. I use the bible, as it is a storehouse of life lessons. Whenever I don’t find something inspiring to write about, I pick the bible and select a section at random. I read a verse or two, understand it, feel the profound meaning inside of it, and then expand in my own words with some real life examples. You can choose a book that represents your religion and share the life lessons from it.

Again, it’s your thoughts, it’s your feelings, it’s your ideas, and it’s your experience. It’s unique in it’s own way. Ruth Ross once said, "There are only three colors, ten digits, and seven notes; it’s what we do with them that's important." Keeping with that thought, express your heart out – the aim however is to express, not impress.

God Bless.

Should I hire an editor or an agency? Should I hire an editor or an agency? - Thanks for the advice. True, I cold just hire writers. That's what I've been doing for last few years. But that is becoming unmanageable. With 4 more writers I'll have to spend half of my day managing them. I'm not qualified to edit their writing and that is affecting quality. Finally, costs I'm incurring with wrong hires, re-training, etc. are soon going to be more than a full time salary for an editor. Ideally, I'd find an agency or an editor/writer that can provide this added level of guidance, quality control and writers management while still not costing an arm and a leg.
Online Teen Magazine... Tips Online Teen Magazine... Tips - I'm looking to soon hire at least 4 full time writers for at least a year. I previously used writers I found online as well as writing agencies but I always ended up in problems. Writers would change often, style and quality varied a lot, admin things like legal, payments, etc. took to much of my time... Even working through an agency didn't help things much. With this new requirement I'd like to do organize it properly from the start. What's the best way to ensure consistent, high quality, consistent style, unique writing ? I can think of two options: 1. Work though an agency. Can you help me recommend an agency which will take the project seriously? I don't want an agency that will just outsource my writing to an Indian writer they found on some board. Agency should ensure consistent editing, create guidelines to help new writers get up to speed, maintain a knowledgebase about the topic, etc. Or am I asking for too much? 2. Hire an editor / project manager who can help me with hiring writers, editing, maintaining consistency, checking for plagiarism etc. If you think this is better, where can I find a person who would work with me on a long term contract basis? Why is one approach better than other? What is more cost effective? My main concern is to spend least of my personal time on this and to get consistent output. Oh, and I need that somebody to have an understanding of web and SEO which is why I'm hoping that I will get some direction here. I'm not looking for the cheapest option. I'm always paying above average rate. I also have quite realistic expectations. For example, for some of my topics I was paying a writer for more than a month just to let him get up to speed with a topic before I expected any output (only to lose him after 2 months because agency screwed him over). As for writing, I will need almost everything - blog posts (ghost written and others), web content, PR, white papers, brochures, pitch letters, articles, etc. Coming topics are only about 10% usual web related and SEO topics. Rest are management across cultures; globalization; offshore IT outsourcing; executive headhunting; M&As; management consulting, etc. Let me know if you can recommend some serious agency or if you know somebody who could help me as an editor / project manager. Or, if you can't recommend anybody, where should I look for such services?
April Contest feedback April Contest feedback - FYI, next competition should have a cut off time based on a timezone...say EST since that's the timezone your in Evan. Just a thought so that the competitors have some guidelines too. That was an Exciting April competition for me. Trying to maintain my spot and keeping the posts as helpful to the forum readers. It also got me to write more freely as I often get writers block.
Re: 5 Ways I've Used Twitter This Week To Grow My Business Re: 5 Ways I've Used Twitter This Week To Grow My Business - Its also a good research tool to see which topics are currently popular, which can be useful information. Also can be used to find out people's opinions about certain products/topics etc.
Women's Newspaper Women's Newspaper - I did pick up this newspaper. I was happy to see something for us but a little disappointed that the main column writers were male! I would think that it would be beneficial to highlight female writers. Has anyone else checked this out?
