The Opportunity of the Information Age

In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell explains that success by no means is just sheer hard work and high IQ. It also involves your upbringing, being presented with the right opportunity at the right time and your thought process. There is one section that I found quite interesting. He lists down the 75 richest humans ever to set foot on planet Earth, from Pharaohs to the current day Carlos Slims. The #1 was John D. Rockefeller and #2 Andrew Carnegie. The strange fact was that 14 of the 75 richest (i.e. ~ 20%, were Americans who were born during the mid 1800s. You know what was significant about that? Because around the 1860s and 1870s, when these guys were reaching adulthood the old economy (agricultural age) was being torn down and a new economy (Industrial age) was being built. Industries like Automobiles, Steel, Railroads, Petroleum, etc. were being formed. So whoever was prepared to get in at the start of this economic revolution made their millions and carved a name out for them. Those who came in late did not make it as big and stayed in the ordinary.

Coming back to today, take a look around you. What do you think is happening in the economy? Don’t you see that the old economy (Industrial Age) is being torn down and a new economy (Information age) is being built? Internet has taken the front stage and put everything else behind. Today the average human spends more time on the Internet than any other place. All forms of products and services are now being sold online. Even cars are being sold online for crying out loud! You can choose you exact specification and place an order for a car online. Only when the car is available, you have to go down to the showroom to pick it up. Travel Agents are going out of business, because every form of travel products/services has moved online. And this is just the start. Are you even aware that the Internet has covered only 20% of the planet? And that 80% is still to go?

So where do you stand in the face of this new economy? Have you updated you skill sets to include online marketing and sales? Have you updated your skill sets to include online technicalities and troubleshooting? Where are you placed today? Because if you don’t seize this opportunity like how the Rockefellers and the Carnegies did, then you too will be left in the wake. This is your chance to get in the game when it’s still hot. Don’t wait. Do your due diligence and jump right in. Whatever is your field of interest; learn more about the online version of the same. Do it! Do it now! Because as it’s said, ‘If you stand still on the road, you WILL get run over’.
