The Pursuit of Fast and Easy money – A road to disaster

Yesterday, I happened to listen to a thought-provoking story from one of Network marketing industry’s leader, Daegen S., and I was quite touched by it. The moral of the story is something that each and every one of us can use in life. It’s a valuable life lesson.

Daegen had walked to the nearest grocery store at around midnight to buy himself a Gatorade. When in queue the person behind him tapped his shoulder and asked for a $1. Daegen asked him what he needed the money for. The stranger started off by telling that he did not have any money and that he had just got out of prison and did not have a job. Daegen, out of curiosity, asked him why he went to jail in the first place? The stranger said that he used to run cocaine from city to another and that he got caught. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. As if things were not bad, around the 8th year an inmate stabbed him in the liver. After his recovery, the warden decided to let him out on parole due to his good behavior throughout. He had no place to go and lived with his mother.

Of course, Daegen helped him out but the real question is the lesson one learns out of his life story. Here was a man who was after fast money and he ended up ruining his life in its pursuit. Unfortunately, he is not alone. Today millions of people run after fast and easy money, without realizing that they are wasting their time and effort in its pursuit. It doesn’t matter what you are doing to get there. If the intention is to make money you are not going to get it. Or maybe you might get it somehow, but you stand to lose much later.

Today I come across so many people who are looking to make fast money online. Entrepreneurs in the Network Marketing industry, especially, have gotten into the industry to make fast money. So that’s all they focus on, nothing else. It’s no wonder that these are exactly the same people who don’t make it in their business.

The moral of the story is simple – If you are in your business with the sole intention of making money, then you are not going to get there. Remember this, the best definition of business that I have ever come across is this: Solving Problems for a profit. Solving Problems comes first, and profit is just a by-product of that. Run your business with the intention of solving your customer’s problems, and profit has to follow.

Take care and God Bless.

Re: e-Commerce and e-Payment providers Re: e-Commerce and e-Payment providers - When I came back to Japan in 1999 I sometimes used to ask my students if they would buy anything on the Internet and at that time most thought it was too risky. I'd encourage them to try by using well known sites such as Amazon.co.jp and also pointed out that using a credit card on a reputable site was safer than using it at a restaurant. I can't remember the last time I had that discussion or when the "tipping point" occurred in Japan. To answer your other question, I use Paypal for several reasons: 1. Brand familiarity 2. Easy to use 3. Free to withdraw 50,000yen+ to my Japanese bank account - a huge benefit (but maybe other systems also offer that...?) 4. Easy to cancel subscriptions On the down side, their transaction fees are quite costly, they are difficult to contact and when disputes arise you can sometimes lose even when you can prove via your tracking service that the disputed item was "delivered" to the customer's address!

Disaster Planning Disaster Planning - [quote="jvprosperity":3o70alwf]In my previous job the company had a manual that listed all the backup procedures so that business go go on as usual without much disruption. e.g. if something were to happen to the call center what steps needed to be taken so that agents can go t a new location to continue taking calls. Also, once a quarter or so the organization would practice the Call Tree notification. e.g. the VP would call their directs and advise that this is a test and those directs would then call their people and so on till it hit the front lines.[/quote:3o70alwf] THose are the kind of things I would think should be done in businesses to prepare for the unexpected. I used to be a department supervisor at a local hospital and we did quarterly disaster drills -- every supervisor was involved and we had to report back to our departments about what was expected of others. Made very good sense that hospitals would do this and there were repercussions for problems in the drills - if there is a disaster, the hospital has to be ready. It made for a tense couple of days for everyone in the building. Shri
