What to do when Overwhelmed – a 5-step approach

Guest post by: John Bino

Article Overview: There are generally two reasons why people procrastinate. One is when they don’t know what to do and the other, is when they have too much to do and don’t know where to start. Let’s talk about the latter part – the one where there is too much to do. This condition is popularly known as Overwhelm. But unlike what most people perceive, overwhelm is actually a good thing - at least, better than not having anything to do at all. Let’s look at how one can easily get over this hurdle.

What to do when Overwhelmed – a 5-step approach

There are generally two reasons why people procrastinate.

Everyone is a victim of procrastination due to overwhelm. I am no exception. Last week I attended a bunch of seminars including Robert Kiyosaki’s ‘Live in Vegas’. After taking in a bunch of new ideas, I just couldn’t stay still and not put the learning into action. But the problem was, there was one too many of these ‘things-to-do’. Each and every of those things seemed equally important. I was so confused as to whether or not to abandon my current business strategy and adopt a new one – should I make a video on this one or that one? I had my head so far up my butt that I just couldn’t see things clearly anymore. The result? No action for 3 full days! Yes, you read right.

And that’s when Jim Rohn’s wise words flashed in my mind – Be a Student, Not NECESSARILY a Follower. He has always advised to listen to all points of views, but form your own. That cooled me down a bit and got me seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Then came another flash of thought, and this is something that every single successful person in the world recommends, and that is to THINK ON PAPER. That was it! I took out my notepad and a pen, and started writing everything that I had on my mind. You won’t believe it, but the moment I finished emptying my thoughts on that sheet of paper I let out a huge sigh of relief. I just don’t know what it is, but I know one thing – IT WORKS!

I took a moment to go through all the points that were written down, and a pattern emerged. Some of them happened to be personal issues, and some of them business-related. I separated them out first. Then I went about breaking it down based on ‘Important and Urgent’ and ‘Can wait’. And only 2 out of the whole list of 21 fell in the former. Voila! Problem identified, Took Action to fix it and I got back in the game. And that my friends is how one should tackle overwhelm.

Long story short, to overcome ‘overwhelm’ you do the following…

Step 1: Write everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, down on paper. Screw the computer; use the old-fashioned paper and pen.

Step 2: Separate the ‘Personal’ issues from the ‘Business’, by writing a bold ‘P’ or ‘B’ next to each line item. This will help you see things in perspective.

Step 3: Give priority to the personal problem. Because if you are not okay in the heart, you are not okay above the neck too. Remember, man is an emotional creature.

Step 4: Separate your list into ‘Important and Urgent’ and ‘Can Wait’.

Step 5: Take action on the ‘Import and Urgent’ first before moving to the rest

Use the above 5-step procedure to deal with overwhelm and keep moving forward. Dennis Waitley, American Author and speaker said, “Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.”

Have an awesome life. God Bless.

Re: Do Women Play the Stock Market? Re: Do Women Play the Stock Market? - Getting others to follow the strategy consistently definitely includes discipline. For me, it took continual practice to develop the discipline to the point that it is second nature for me to follow the system. It works, and I liked getting greating results, so that helped keep me disciplined. When I didn't follow the system, I would lose money on an investment. That was enough to remind myself to stick with the systematic approach. Also, the approach I use is a simple approach versus some of the more complex systems I have seen out there. I figure why complicate things if I can keep it simple and still be profitable. My goal isn't to be an egghead; it's to continue making money in the market. Regardless of whether the market is up or down, I am still profitable.

Re: If Plan "A" didn't work... Re: If Plan "A" didn't work... - Hi Evan, Thanks for this post, it certainly makes us think of our own approach to business success. GT, I agree completely that using plan B does not necessarily mean that plan A has failed. My approach to Internet Marketing, because of its many facets is to decide on one destination or goal at the beginning and I may have to open several roads to reach it but ultimately they are all heading in the same direction. Some of the roads will have twists and turns or may even be closed occasionally but they all keep on moving eventually, just at different speeds. My focus is to keep an eye on all of the roads and not to assume that if one route is really slow that I should give up on it. regards, Mal.
Internet Marketing Internet Marketing - That is an unusual approach if you're trying to promote your business or your site. I've run into promoters and business owners who are deceptive online and in the real world. However, NOT everyone is like that. I work very hard to be honest in all my promotion and in my writing. I cannot figure out what you're actually trying to accomplish with this piece, but it sounds like a sweeping condemnation of all promoters and people who promote online. Sounds like a strange approach for a person who has a "marketing" website. Shri
