Is Reading Music Really That Important?

Many people learned to read music through music lessons. This may not be available to everyone and it does not guarantee that you will learn how to read music. Surprisingly, there are a lot of music teachers today that teach mostly by rote or by ear. Students in these situations never have to learn how to read music.

Is Reading Music Really That Important?

An important part of being a good musician is acquiring the skill of reading music. There are many musicians out there that still do not know how to do this. Many people learned to read music through music lessons. This may not be available to everyone and it does not guarantee that you will learn how to read music. Surprisingly, there are a lot of music teachers today that teach mostly by rote or by ear. Students in these situations never have to learn how to read music.

Is it necessary to know how to read music in order to enjoy making music? "Absolutely not" is the answer to that question. Music is a listening art form. This art form is captured by writing it down on paper.

If I don't need any training or reading ability in order to play an instrument or sing, then why bother learning how to read music at all? In short, more doors of opportunity will open up for you. Once you realize how much more music you can play and explore by knowing how to read music, your confidence will really soar!

Why is reading music important? Music reading is a lot like literacy. You can survive in society without being able to read, but many tasks may be more difficult for you and take more time to complete. The chances of getting a good paying job is a lot lower and you may miss many opportunities that could change your life.

What kinds of opportunities are available to me after learning how to read music? Once you know how to read music, you will become a more independent musician and person. You no longer have to rely on someone else to play a song for you in order to learn how to play or sing the song yourself. The entire world of music opens up to you when you know about theory, scales, composition and arranging! Also, the ability to read music will give you the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians. As with most jobs in the music business, you have to know how to read music if you want to get hired.

Reading music is a language that anyone can learn. It can bring so much richness to your life. Just like in grade school when you were first learning how to read books, practice is the key to really mastering this skill. All you need to do is get yourself started. You don't have to be smart, talented or have lots of money to learn how to read music. The only thing you need to have is a willingness to try.

Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!

how many hours do you spend in here per day? - How many hours do you spend here per day? Reading post and posting reply. Ever since I joined this great community, i have been spending at least 1 hour in this forum per day.
Re: How do we stimulate more forum activity and interest? - We do have the ability to track # of posts (as evident in the contest tabs above) - Reading posts is a different matter - I'm not sure if phpbb has any plugins for that but it's an interesting suggestion.
Finding creativity - Great topic Andy! For me it's: - Going for a walk (I always try to get out at least once during the day) - Taking a shower - Reading business magazines (especially Inc and Business 2.0) - Late at night (I'm more productive / creative at night than during the day) - Relaxing with a drink at the bookstore
