How to Promote your Business on Facebook for Free

Guest post by: David Anthony Watson

Article Overview: Facebook was launched back in 2004 and has grown exponentially over the past 6 years to more than 500 million users worldwide as of July 2010. The website often ranks number 2 after Google for volume of users on a daily basis. This means that Facebook is the ideal platform to grow your business as long as you have a relevant product or service to promote. So if you are a business owner and are not using Facebook then you will probably want to change that quickly.

How to Promote your Business on Facebook for Free

There are different ways to promote your business on Facebook but the two quickest and simplest ways are to create a fan page and create a Facebook ad. Each offer good opportunities to market to your prospects or your current customers. Bear in mind however that only the fan page and your own personal profile are free. If you are considering an ad there will be a charge incurred for the service.

If you already have a Facebook personal profile it is very easy to set up a business or fan page and it is free of charge. If not then you will need to set up a personal profile firstly. Once you have a profile, on the left navigation bar you click on the Ads option and you will come to the business page. You then follow the steps to completing your business page. The layout is very similar to your personal page with a wall and information there to promote your business. This is the simplest way to promote your business on Facebook for free.

With a business page you have the advantage of adding HTML to make your page look like a website. If you are not au fait with HTML you can outsource this work for you. Take a look at business pages and have a think about how to brand yours.

There is a ‘like’ button on your page which viewers can click on to automatically be subscribed to your page. The objective for the business owner is to increase the number of subscribers so you have build a list to market to. You can also have the ‘like’ button placed on your blog or website so viewers can subscribe from outside of Facebook.

There are many more ways to promote your fan page such as suggesting to your friends to like it, you can tweet about it and when you post to your wall friends of friends may like it too.

The second option is advertising your business on Facebook and this option has a cost involved. Setting up an advertising account on Facebook is easy. You can choose which campaign you would like promote on a cost per click (CPC) basis or cost per thousand impressions (CPM). The first relates to how many people click on your ad and the second relates to how many people are served the ad. Bear in mind that this does not necessarily mean that they see the ad.

You would generally be promoting either your business page or your website and link an offer to get peoples attention. The great benefit of this advertising is that it is quite targeted as you can set who you want to be served the ad. For example you can specify by geography, age and gender and many more variable. You can find the advertising tool easily within Facebook

These are two ways to promote your business to start off with but remember that you should also be promoting yourself on Facebook and developing your own personal brand. Everyone has their own story which is unique to them and you would be surprised how many people will want to hear it.

Re: How can I promote my site? Re: How can I promote my site? - Now days there are number of video channels like YouTube and even you can start posting your videos on social media sites like Facebook. Promote your website on Social media websites like Facebook, Twitter where you will get Hugh number of quality visitors.
Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I use Facebook pages for Business and rarely ever use Twitter. I hace lost count of the no. of Hotels that I have visited, regarding their marketing campaigns, that may have 5k Facebook Fans and only 100 followers on Twitter. It is a lot more difficult to engage with people on Twitter and thus harder to gain traction. If you are a business like Nike, then Twitter is great, but if you are an SME, then focus on Facebook or LinkedIn (if you are providing a professional service.) You can always have your Facebook feed directly in to Twitter, so you can have a presence on both, but do the work on one. Also check out ping.fm for managing campaigns - it is a free tool, and a great time saver.

Facebook and Business Facebook and Business - While on the Elevator today I read that MySpace and Facebook are surpassing adult-sites in traffic volumes - just thought that was interesting fact. As far as your business is concerned I think that having a Facebook account is viable as long as you keep it business and the most important thing to increase your traffic would be to link up with people well-known in your business-circle. e.g. if your were in the Marketing Business Circle I would link up with people like Dan Kennedy, Mike Filsame, Yanik Silver etc. People linked up with them will now start pouring into your content.
Re: Social media question Re: Social media question - Facebook is where I get all my traffic. Facebook is great, because you can create fan pages and your customers come to you. Twitter is good, but I just don't see the same results. I think Facebook is the most popular and it's easier for people to find what they're looking for.
