The top five keys to starting a successful home based business online

1. Think long term

It is important to have a long term plan prior to starting your business so that you have something to aim for. It is very easy to get bogged down in detail when you are setting up because there is so much to do and you are likely to be doing everything! That is why having your long term vision and goals will help you maintain focus at all times. Have your vision and values somewhere visible in your office to remind yourself why you are in this business and what you are planning to achieve. Spend time every day talking through what success will look like for you and do not give up until you attain it.

2. Have a marketing plan

All good organizations have a marketing plan laying out their key activity over a twelve month period. It does not matter how much your budget is, it is still important to ensure you know what campaigns you are creating by month. Try and ensure all your activity is measurable so you can understand the ROI from each channel and remove non performing campaigns. And it goes without saying that you need to ensure you are constantly learning the latest online skills to improve your work.

3. Be relevant

Research your target market as much as you can before launching your business. You want to step into the shoes of your audience and ask yourself if you would want this product or service on offer. You can complete simple market research by conducting a survey amongst your network to gain some insights. If you already have customers it is critical that you regularly ask them for feedback on your products and services. This way you can adapt to the changing times and keep your skills updated.

4. Have the right product

If you really want to be successful in sales and marketing you need to truly believe in your product as your passion will filter through into your communications and people will buy into it. Ensure that you have a ‘unique selling point or’ USP. What can you offer that differentiates you from the market? Make sure that you really sell this key point as this will be attractive to your audience. If you are in doubt then take a step back and do more market research until you have refined your product or service.

5. Focus on you

It can be daunting when setting up on your own so it is important that you remember to focus on your mental and physical wellbeing along your journey. There is no point having a successful home based business if you are not feeling on top form. Try and have regular breaks from your desk and get some exercise when you can. This will really energise you and keep you on the road to success. Finally and this is key, do not forget to maintain regular contact with your social network because setting up on your own can be tough and you need to have support to keep your mind healthy.

Setting up on your own could be less difficult than you may think. Follow these simple steps and you will be well on your way to creating a successful home based business.

How can I start home-based business? How can I start home-based business? - I am not sure what you mean by home-based and how my story can help but my home-based business is my web design business. I can work from home and go out to meet my clients. These times (When I'm out) is the most 'dangerous', because if clients need some files or if something didn't get through email, I'll need to find the nearest internet hot spot (i bring my external hard drive everywhere) to service the client or come up with an excuse. initially it was difficult, working from home and starting up. work was scarce but I knew it was only in the beginning. after 5 months, I have quite a constant flow of work but still the cheques are not that regular but its getting there. I met other people who has started home-based business and they range from travel agents to company secretaries. hope that helps

Re: Women and Home Based Business Opportunities Re: Women and Home Based Business Opportunities - Honestly, in most cases today... stay at home moms or wives does not necessarily equate to unemployment or anything of that sort. You will be surprised to see how many women who are making it big working at home. Perhaps the convenience of working at home and the flexibility of the work schedule attracts many women at home to engage in online work rather than actual office based work. Furthermore you should see how many clients prefer women over men when it comes to online jobs at home. Most clients states that women are always on time for work and are commited to get the job done. There are also a lot of women entrepreneurs who are now opting to start a home based online business because of the benefit of getting to be with your family at home. I know some women who successfully balances their online business and their roles as wife and mother. It sure is fun to see them work their business like a bonding time for them. I know one that is running a RTW clothing line online... Her husband is a photographer so he takes pictures for their products while their children gladly poses for the camera as a part of their portfolio. Well I guess if you really want to work out a scenario there are a lot of ways.. but if you are not that determined to do so then you can just think of different excuses.
Time spent Time spent - I log into this site at least once (sometimes twice) for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes and that's at least 6 days a week. I work a full time job and also work independently, running a home based business and also assist my husband with his home based business...I also have 2 kids under the age of 14 and one 20 year old, so i'm generally very busy and don't have a ton of time to be here more than that. I believe too much time spent on the internet in general is not healthy and had to cut back on my childrens time online, as one saturday when I was especially busy, I realized they had been on for 6 hours straight! so now I only allow each of them to get 2 hours a day.
Insurance for Home Based Business? Insurance for Home Based Business? - Apparently homeowners insurance and liability insurance may not be enough to cover your at home based business. Especially if you are running the business out of a detached garage or other dwelling on your property. Does anyone have another type of business insurance for their home based business or know anything about this?
