Traffic is the people who will see your site when they do searches for particular products, services or information, using the search engine. Having a web site, with a domain name and web hosting provider is only the beginning. There are multiple ways for you to begin to generate traffic, and obtain leads for your home based business, at no cost to you.

1. Free advertising exchanges eg ListJoe.com and Craiglist.com are easy to use, and are an excellent tool to begin with. All you need to do is sign up for their service. You then place an ad, and the URL to your web site, blog or whatever it is that you want people to see. The viewer clicks on your ad, which takes them directly to your web site. A few of these sites is sufficient, otherwise you will spend more time clicking on ads to generate points, than you will in time needed to run your business.

2. Article marketing is one of the best tools available for generating leads for your home based business. You simply write articles about anything you have a passion about. There are various sites where you post your site, for others to see and read. Doing this, and adding your URL, will lead others to your web site. The trick here is to allow people to get to know you on a personal level, rather than seeing you as only another person promoting another online business. At best, it is advisable to write at least two articles a week.

3. Social networking sites like Facebook.com and Twitter.com are great way to connect not only with other members, but to connect and develop a personal relationship with those who have the same interests as you. As you develop your rapport, you can then begin to discuss your online business and offer your web site address, which will be the beginning of generating more leads for your home based business.

Obtaining leads for a home based business takes work, and time. It is best to start small, and get each technique down pat before moving on to the next method. Starting out small, also helps you to find what is working for you. The key is that if what you are doing is not generating leads for your home based business, then stop using it and try other methods.

Re: Direct Mail Postcards - Great discussion! I just started using direct mail postcards for a business of mine. The leads are generated by the company and then sent to me to place on the postcards that are already made up. It's important to get targeted leads for any form of advertising venture. Finding quality leads isn't tough, but takes some work. Luckily for me the company does this work for me. These people are interested in starting a home business, working from home, etc. That's what I'm advertising on the postcards, so I would say they're very well targeted. The postcards are also made by the company who have over 20 years of experience in generating responses. Now, the problem I see as I deal with this directly working for an insurance company where I call leads, many people may forget that they ever requested information on the subject. In this case the postcard would probably get thrown away, unless it really grabbed their attention or struck their memory. The same problem can be seen when someone needs to confirm their request for being added to your email newsletter.

Re: That First Customer! - Hey Tristan, Another thing to consider is to think about how targeted your visitors are. Meaning, are they actually looking for what you have to offer, and if so, are they finding it. Proper keyword research and testing will help you bring in targeted leads from the search engines. I think this will help you get that first customer and keep bringing in more and more customers.
I LOVE being able to choose the clients I take on... - As I offer a service to businesses I've found there is nothing more enjoyable then meeting a client, discussing how you can improve their business (in terms of generating leads), creating the solution and then seeing them receive more targeted leads everyday because of the solution you've setup, which they previously had no access to. Often clients like I've described above are so happy with you and the way you conduct your business that they will often refer you to other businesses they know of and will always come back to you when they want to extend their own business again. If you can afford to pick and choose the clients you take on, I highly recommend choosing the businesses that will trust you and listen to your advice. It's not worth taking on a business that is critical of absolutely everything that you tell and offer them.
Re: Is any one making money with twitter here? - This is a great thread. I disagree with the thought that twitter is at it's peak, or close to it. I do agree however that Twitter is beginning to seem saturated with ads, bots and all sorts of unwanted spam. You as an entrepreneur have to rise above this and stand out from the crowd. I think that these ad services are a bad idea, they make your twitter profile look like a spam bot, full of ads nobody wants to see. I would advise that you shy away from offers like these if you want to maintain the integrity of your profile. Twitter is a means of building your personal brand, when you build your brand people begin to trust you and when people trust you they will buy from you but you will dissolve that trust if you start posting ads all over the place. Every single entrepreneur on my mastermind team uses twitter in conjunction with other free and paid methods. Twitter does make up the MAJORITY of my free traffic and offers extremely targeted leads that do generate cash flow for me. I will post some advanced twitter lessons on my blog in the near future.
