Start with Your Content

Do not start writing content for your blog with the intention of making money. Expecting earnings overnight will set you up for failure. The blog should start with plenty of content (for your readers and the search engines) that focuses on providing something valuable to your readers. When you write, do not forget about the beginners in your niche, those who want to learn how to do something, in simple terms.

Promote the Blog

Go to places where you think your readers may be and promote the blog. Chances are your readers can be found on many different social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

Get Involved in the Blogging Community

Blogging is all about the sense of community it provides to the bloggers and the readers. Get involved within the community and work with other bloggers to promote each other's blogs. Participate in forums, but remember the blog posts are more frequently crawled by Google than the forum posts are. Engage your readers by asking them for feedback with polls, and come up with other ways to get them involved. Offer guest blogging spots to readers and offer to guest post for someone who does it for you. This gets a lot of cross promotional traffic juices flowing. Participate in blog carnivals, and host one once a month.

Keep Your Readers



Encourage readers to subscribe to your blog via email or RSS. This keeps people coming back to your blog and gives you access to a long list of contacts. When you send out an email update to your subscribers, traffic will surge. With traffic surge usually comes a boost in advertising revenue, too, but make sure not to abuse this privilege.

Monetize

For newer blogs, monetization through affiliate and advertising network ads is the best way to go. As the blog ages and grows in readership, it is possible to move on to selling ads directly to the public. When the blog ages, consider hiring other writers to write posts for you, paying them from the revenue the ads bring in. Depending on the niche and your expertise, create a ebook, electronic training course, or something of value to your readers you can sell to them, offering a discount at launch to loyal readers.
