The saying goes, "By failing to plan, you plan to fail." It is important for any business venture to have a well thought out and written business plan, and the same is true for a business online. This will help you get your idea together, take a look at the competition, help you setup your pricing and service or product offerings, and more. If you plan to seek funding for any online business, most sources will want to see a business plan.

Take Care of the Legal Aspects

An online business is still a business. Research your local, state, and federal laws around the type of business you want to operate and position yourself to be in legal compliance with all the issues you may face.

Securing the Domain Name

Purchase the domain name you want. There are several different places online you can do this. If the domain you want is already taken, consider purchasing something like it, or something new all together. Be sure to have several different ideas on hand in case your first picks are taken. Think keywords, easy to remember, and easy to spell.

Securing Web Hosting

Web hosting is required to attach your domain to, so you can host your files that your website needs to run, and to get it online. A domain without web hosting will do you no good. There are several different hosting plans available from several different companies, though we recommend using a plan with unlimited storage, unlimited data transfer (traffic eats data transfer), and the ability to host unlimited domains in case you decide to start another business or launch multiple websites later on down the road. These plans are usually billed annually for around $5.95 a month.

Designing Your Website

You can design your own website with a number of tools-most web hosts offer a designer tool for free or cheap. If you don't want to go that route, there are thousands of web designers working on a freelance basis, so you can reach out to one of the freelance job sites to post your project and find a designer who is willing to work with you and your budget.

Marketing Your Website and Search Engine Optimization

It is important to have a marketing plan in place, and design the website with both readers and search engines in mind. This way you can get traffic to your business website and start making sales or gaining clients.

Build a Customer Base

Use the marketing and search engine optimization tactics to help build a customer base. Advertise online and locally. Don't forget message boards, classified ads, and social networks.

Building Repeat Business

Keep your customers happy, offering sales and specials, or customer loyalty discounts. The most successful businesses thrive mostly on repeat business.

Accounting and Taxes

Keep track of your finances and file taxes appropriately. If you cannot handle this on your own, hire an accountant to help you.

PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
