Blogging can be a very powerful money tool, but long before any money comes in, the blog must be established correctly. Not everyone can be successful when it comes to blogging for profit, so here are some tips to help you make sure your blog gets started off on the right foot.
Keyword Research
One of the most important things to consider before writing a blog post is the keywords you will center the blog post around. Conduct some keyword research with any number of free tools online such as Wordtracker, SEOBook, or Google AdWords, to find a phrase to write about. These tools let you know what people are searching for, so you can eventually rank for the terms, and bring in free traffic from the search engines.
One of the best ways to keep track of the keyword research is to create a spreadsheet of your findings, and create an editorial calendar of your posts based around those keywords. This will help you keep up a posting frequency as well, to give the blog plenty of content for the search engines to index. Don't write sporadically, write on a schedule. When you run out of keywords on your list, conduct more research in another area related to your blog niche and start again.
Backlinks
Backlinks play a critical role in how well the search engine robots read and index your site. A backlink is a link to your site from another site. You want to spend time building quality backlinks, because they must look natural and come from related niches in order to be most effective. Build backlinks through commenting on related blogs, posting on forums, link exchanges on blog rolls, article marketing, and social promotion.
Though it may be tempting to buy backlinks from various places advertised on the Internet, this is a black hat SEO method which could easily get your site banned from google all together.
Article Marketing
Write articles on topics related to your blog, and in the resource box, point people to your blog for more information. This is a great way to get traffic to your blog, build backlinks, and earn a little money (if you post in places such as Associated Content) along the way. Send your articles to article directories such as eZine Articles. If you are not into article writing, hire a freelancer to do it for you.
Social Media Promotion
If you're not active on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, join them. Don't use them just to promote your material, but instead meet people and interact with them valuable to gain ground with the community and then you'll get a whole new source of traffic. Don't forget social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Mixx, and Reddit. Look for niche specific places to join as well, to help get targeted traffic.
