Business Blog Step 10 - Ideas to Help Overcome Writer's Block

Occasionally you will arrive at a point where you just do not know what to write, the so called Writer’s Block - or maybe that should be called the Blogger’s Block in this instance. Here are some ideas from which we can identify methods which should help us to overcome this potential block in our blogging activities.

Work on several posts at the same time:

Sometimes, if the content is not coming freely to you on one subject then leave it for the time being and change to another one. Not only does this allow you to get down some ideas on this new topic, but that in turn may inspire other ideas that you can develop in the first one. In any case, it gives you a break and will allow you to return to it later with a clearer mind.

Talk about it:

If you’re having trouble actually getting your idea down in writing, then try talking about it instead. You can either do this to yourself or you can do so to a friend or colleague. When you do this, it should help the ideas to start to flow and enable you to start to get a new flow down in writing.

Mind Maps:

Used religiously by many people, this is a great way to take your central idea and encourage you to brainstorm and explore all of the different ideas which it sparks. To start with, write the title of the post in the middle of a piece of paper and add branches with the names of the main topics that you want to cover – you then continue by adding secondary level for the sub topics and so on, developing ideas as you go.

Start in the middle:

Try to write some of the ideas that will form the middle of the post and don’t worry about writing the introduction until after you have written the body of the text. We often get stopped because we try to get the first part of a post just right before moving on to what is really the meat of the post. So, switch it round and you should find that not only is the post easier to write but that the start will flow more naturally later on from what you have written.

Freewrite:

I suppose that you could call this a stream of consciousness. The idea is simply to start writing and continue to do so until a certain period of time has elapsed. The idea is just to generate thoughts, ideally on a specific topic although you can also do so in a way which is totally unfocused. Use this as a way to get a first draft or a series of ideas down on something and then take it from there.

Reread and Notate:

Get all of the information together that you are basing your post on and/or relevant research and background material, and have all of these by your side. Then simply read through this information and, as you read, type your reaction to it – this might be to expand on what you are reading, to explain a particular idea or disagree with another part, to add further information or to link to other articles.

Write Dialogue:

Try to imagine that you are having a conversation with someone who is talking to you and asking you about the subject matter of your post. Ideally this person should be someone that you do not react well to and is perhaps asking potentially difficult or contrary questions.

Re: Your choice between... Re: Your choice between... - I will take the $100,000 and double it on it becomes millions before I spend it. Though I am crazy about information, yet I would rather take the money and turn it into a million before I spend a dime out of it. I will do it in 4 steps. Step 1 turn $100,000 to $200,000 Step 2 turn $200,000 to $400,000 Step 3 turn $400,000 to $800,000 Step 4 turn $800,000 to $1600,000. After getting the goal of step 4, I will spend the $600,000 on myself then continue to double the millions again. I could then by the book for $1,000,000
Re: Interested in Pinterest? Re: Interested in Pinterest? - This means pinterest is here to stay and this is what ideas is all about. Ideas make the world go round. Ideas is the fuel of this economy.
Step by step approach Step by step approach - Here's what I would do; Step 1 - Observe Wal-Mart’s target customers, what does Wal-Mart offer them? How long do they stay? Discover what it is that they might want or need that Wal-Mart doesn't offer, and then write those ideas down. Some ideas to get you started are - A cafe or fast food venue, something for the kids to do while the parents shop, etc Step 2 - Take that list, and weigh up the pros and cons of each idea, and then select the best one for you. Don't worry about not using all the space. Step 3 - Start the best business for you, and then release the other ideas to the general market and sublet the rest of the space to those who could fill some of the niches you've come up with, plus any they can come up with. If money isn't a factor then developing the building to suit multiple small leases may be a better option, as it's a diversified income, which is potentially more stable than one big income stream.
Need a book recommendation for writing better Need a book recommendation for writing better - I'm always looking for ways to improve my writing skills, so I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good copywriting or copyediting book? I was actually thinking of reading "The Copywriter's Handbook : A Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Copy That Sells" by Robert W Bly [u:w3cg00nn]OR[/u:w3cg00nn] "The Copyeditor's Handbook: A Guide for Book Publishing and Corporate Communications" by Amy Einsohn. Would anyone know if these books are any good? Thanks
Consult your customers before you change your procedures.... Consult your customers before you change your procedures.... - Not sure where this topic should go, but... I just finished reading a rather funny series of posts on MySpace. I belong to a group called WritersCafe. This group also has a webpage, where people post their stories and poems for other people to critique. Apparently, today, the Writers Cafe website has undergone a complete makeover...and its users were taken completely by surprise - apparently no one in charge at Writers Cafe bothered to tell anyone that the format would be changing, or asked for any input on what the changes should be. So there's over 2 pages of complaints on the Writers Cafe group message board, with people saying they can't log in, they dont' like the new design (it looks too "girly" - whatever the heck that means!), and other complaints. And while this only happened today, I have seen other instances of this. Every once in a while yahoo.mail or google groups implements a change in design - and it is never as good as it used to be. Then of course there's the IMDB (internet movie database) which also recently changed its design without telling anyone first or solicting input - and the new design stinks. Fortunately there's a button so you can use the old design, which is what I do... But in all these experiences, the main point of irritation is that no one in "charge" ever asks the people who use their site, if they want changes made and what they should be. It's like they've got all these programmers on staff and have to justify their salaries, so they have them work up "improvements" - but these are techheads who probably don't use the site, so they just do what they like, rather than what users like. The fact that it happens continually, across various businesses, is a rather disturbing trend.
