Business Blog Step 18 - Getting People to Recommend Your Blog

I could have used refer instead of recommend, but I prefer the concept of recommending which has a more positive connotation – and when someone recommends your Blog, that is a very positive thing. Recommending can be done in many ways including simply telling people about the blog, and the simplest way can often be the best!

Online, this type of word of mouth will be done through reference and linking – the lifeblood of the blogosphere. The main difference, of course, is that rather than just telling one person, you are now telling all the people who read your blog.

Writing posts which reference a post on another blog is the best way to recommend them – in doing so, the original content is likely to be used as the basis of the new post, which may then go on to develop the arguments it contains.

A post can also be referred to in an article or indeed in a comment. In each case, it is a clear indication that the content is of value and is a personal recommendation that their readers should visit the blog to read all of the content.

When you are referenced from another blog, the likelihood is that the blogger will also use a trackback, and so you will be aware of the link that has been made. If possible, you should try to develop the conversation further by commenting on their new post and also thanking them for the reference.

Perhaps the simplest way to be referenced in a Blog, and yet the one which will take the most time, is to be added to its Blogroll - the blogroll is the term used to indicate “Recommended Blogs” and is a series of links which will be found on all serious blogs. However, this is only likely to come after you have established a strong relationship with the owner of that blog.

You can always actively seek out other Bloggers to refer to you and hence recommend one of your posts. This is not quite as unusual as it may seem, though it is important to go about it in the right way.

You can contact bloggers who write in similar areas to yourself with details of one of your posts that they may find interesting – if you are lucky you will get some who reference the post on their blog and hence link back to you. It is only advisable to do this on a very few posts and also approach them with a little background on yourself along the lines of “here’s something I thought you might find interesting”.

When you recommend a blog to someone it is like inviting them to join a network or a community, just as if you are sharing something important with them. And remember that these types of recommendations come from the most important source: from your readers - from people and not from computer generated links.

Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy Re: Best Internet Marketing Strategy - Hi David, I agree about the Blogosphere. You have a smaller group that Blog, but do so on the premise that they think they should, but have never really considered the purpose of their Blog. Then I think there are a few SEO or Internet Marketing types that see Blogging as just another link building strategy. But the largest group of Bloggers, tend to be people who enjoy writing and discussing their topics of interest. Blogging is good for link building, but the true Blogger is a breed apart from the rest. They want to dialog, to debate, to have feedback and they are very willing to link to other worthwhile conversations that are relevant to their topic. I agree with you. These group of Bloggers obviously are passionate about their writing and together, they create huge conversation trails interactive and travel from Blog to Blog. But the evidence is clear with this group that loves what they write about. With comments enabled on a Blog and having a Blog tuned to a specific purpose you already have the evidence of original Social Media.
Re: Alexa Ranking Goals Re: Alexa Ranking Goals - That's great GT! What method did you use to put up the Entrepreneur Blog Network in your Wordpress Blog? We're always looking for the easiest methods to help bloggers who are not techies get involved.
EvanCarmichael.com suggestion EvanCarmichael.com suggestion - Maybe I missed it but I would like to suggest that a Blog be created to support the Forum. The idea is that in the blog you put in snippets of some of the biggest conversations with a 'read more' link to the forum itself. Setting up the Blog and clipping some conversations onto it wouldn't take very long.
Jen's Blog - Spam protection Jen's Blog - Spam protection - Jen, I like the Blog and just posted a comment to one of your articles. From my experience you need to implement some sort of SPAM capture tools. i use them on my Blog and it's been a life saver as I'm getting hit by spam atleast 5 times a day. I use Wordpress and they have plugins like Captcha and SPAM Karma installed.
Blog Marketing Anyone? Blog Marketing Anyone? - Hi Kevin I suppose you could use the same SEO principles on a Blog as you can for a website but the more content you have within your Blog, the better rankings/traffic you would receive. Would you have time to write a full length article with tips in it every day or second day to get the article count rolling over every week? I would also like to know if anyone has had any experiences with marketing blogs and the traffic they received.
