Developing your Traffic Streams
Driving traffic to your website or blog is a battle that can seem uphill for those who are first starting out, or for those who have yet to have that certain level of traffic needed to help perpetuate the cycle. It seems that once you gain a certain critical mass, there are generally enough people talking about you to keep the flow of traffic either consistent, or to increase it even further, however up until that point it is most likely something that will weigh heavily on your mind, and will need to be a daily focus.
Now there are two ways you can go about spending your time increasing the level of traffic that your site currently receives, and both have their merits. I will outline both and you can choose the one that works best for you, or perhaps try both and flip back and forth between the two as it suits you, or for as long as you are seeing progress with them.
The first method, is to analyze your analytics and see where your biggest sources of traffic are coming from and then invest the time into developing these as well as any others that you might be neglecting. For example if your largest source of traffic is from a handful of referring sites, and only a small portion is coming from the search engines, you need to develop as SEO strategy in order to build up this primary source of traffic that your website could and should be receiving from Google, and the other Search Engines. Some of the larger sources of traffic could include websites such as Facebook, twitter, or Google just to name a few, and it is up to you to decide which you these you should focus on in order to provide you with the most effective return on your investment of time, or even money.
I'd also like to point out that for many, a large source of traffic might come from social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Del.icio.us, or Stumbleupon, however I wouldn't recommend focusing your time and energy on developing these streams as the traffic that comes from them is typically of extremely poor quality and will rarely result in an engaged reader of your material, unless of course if your website deals with images of cute kittens, or viral videos which of course suit these sources extremely well.
The second method is to evaluate all sources of traffic and implement a program to develop each one individually, with the intention that the cumulative effect of all combined will result in worthwhile amount of traffic being driven to your site. For example if in your referral logs, you have a dozen websites that you guest blogged on in the past and they are sending you a handful of visitors each month, you could implement a guest post campaign where you add an extra four or five guest posts to those 12 sites in order to boost up the level of traffic that that traffic stream is currently sending to you.
Nobody is utilizing every method of traffic driving tactics out there, and by focusing your attention on traffic streams that you already have, you'll be able to exponentially grow the number of visitors coming into your site each and every month.
