Guest post by: Isabella Fiorentino

Article Overview: Let's see should I give my child an allowance? How old is the child? Does he or she know how to read and write yet? Toddlers of course do not get an allowance. Ten year olds should clean their rooms without an allowance. If you are old enough to get a paper route then the situation changes. But to answer the question: Should I give my child an allowance? Should I Give My Child An Allowance?

Let's see should I give my child an allowance? How old is the child? Does he or she know how to read and write yet? Toddlers of course do not get an allowance. Ten year olds should clean their rooms without an allowance. If you are old enough to get a paper route then the situation changes. But to answer the question: Should I give my child an allowance? Here is my take on it.

I say no. You should not give your child an allowance. Even if they do household chores for it. If you give your child an allowance for doing household chores to try and teach them the value of money, the only thing you will get is children who grow up being sloppy and lazy. They will marry and have children of their own and their houses would be messy because they will expect to be compensated for it. They will want to be paid for doing the very thing they should be doing for themselves for free in the first place. You should keep your house cleaned. The kids should keep their rooms cleaned and homework finished because that is what you are supposed to do!
No, you should not give them money for that. They are too young to learn money until they can get a paper route. Then they are ready to learn how to spend, save and invest for their future. Just giving your child an allowance for cleaning their room is not teaching them the value of money. It tells them its okay to be messy some days when you don't feel like doing chores. The only thing is you don't get paid. No big deal. Now, if you want to teach them that they need to do their chores, then keep them from doing the fun activities they enjoy like playing with their friends. Kids understand that.
I believe in spankings but I don't believe in using belts or other objects to beat your child. My mother tells me we were spanked as children but I do not remember it at all. The only thing damaged is hurt feelings. I just remember the lessons taught and I believe I am a much better person for it. All things considered the lessons from the olden days are best mixed with a few modern practices. No allowance for kids but taking away the i-pod and video games will get your point across.
And when your children are grown and they start to think for themselves and come up with ideas for bringing in more money to help the household: then the money lessons begin. Saving and investing is a good place to start. God Bless

Sports is queen! Sports is queen! - About four years ago I started a webzine called The Thunder Child, devoted to science fiction and fantasy in all media. Growth was verrrrrrrrrrrrry slow at first, but has gradually picked up so that now I'm making a respectable income from my amazon.com and google adsense. (Well, from adsense, anyway. Amazon is a drop in the bucket compared to what adsense brings in.) Last year I put together a website showcasing the Tennessee Lady Vols (who won the NCAA championships last year), and just two weeks ago I put together a small website for Jacoby Ellsbury, a rookie outfielder for the Boston Red Sox - called a "phenom" and already very popular. The Lady Vols site has about 20 pages...the Ellsbury site has 5. Compared with The Thunder Child that, started out with about 20, and is now at about 1,000 and growing. Well, the hits on those two sports sites are more than three times what the hits on my Thunder Child site was during the first year of its existence. Since I've been a sports fan all my life, I reaaaaally wish that I'd started a sports webzine four years ago instead of this sci fi one, because I think my income now would be treble what it is. No doubt about it, sports rules!
hosting more than one site on a domain? hosting more than one site on a domain? - I use ipower, because I like their file manager interface. (Although it is not as good as geocities - but they annoyed me and I'll never use them again.) Ipower does seem to outsource it's Help features to non-native-English speaking people, which can be annoying if you have problems, but although my site was down for a couple of days last year, for the most part I haven't had any problems where I need to deal with them. My question is... what about hosting more than one site on a single domain? My main domain is The Thunder Child, but I've purchased domain names for my two other web magazines, which I host under the Thunder Child umbrella. This way I'm only paying $100 a year for one site, plus $18 for my domain names, instead of paying $300 a year for individual sites. This makes sense to me, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any insights. Should websites have their own individual sites, expensive as that may be, or is "umbrella hosting" okay?
Re: How Many Friends Is Too Many? Re: How Many Friends Is Too Many? - I worked with MySpace for a time, trying to develop contacts to send to my Thunder Child webzine. Got plenty of friends... but never got any benefit out of it...
Re: Have a Security Clearance Question? But are afraid to ask? Re: Have a Security Clearance Question? But are afraid to ask? - I think I've already addressed your topic in another forum or thread, but I think the easiest way to generate additional traffic to your web site is to provide content that is fresh, new, and insightful. Give users a reason to access your web site besides purchasing your services. Give them a reason to gain knowledge and they will come back and give you business when they can. Good luck in your campaign, and I hope everything turns out for you! One question I have is do security clearances check your family information as well (family criminal offences, etc).
