Are you ready to work full time from home?

It's now almost 7 years since I started dabbling on the internet, trying to make money online. At that time it was a bit of an experiment, kind of like a hobby - something that I did partly for the enjoyment and partly in the hope that I would make enough money to leave my day job. 3 years after I go started my hobby turned in to a business, generating enough income from for me to leave my full time day job.

If you are thinking of doing the same, you may want to read my list of 5 questions that you need to ask yourself before you leave your day job 1. Do you have a financial cushion? Before you give up your full time or part time job, make sure you have some money in the bank in case something goes wrong. Preferably you should make sure that you have no credit card debts or loans and have at least 3 months salary in the bank just to allow you to get back on your feet if the worst happens.

2. Are you making enough money? Sounds obvious, but remember to add up your current outgoings to see if your online income will cover everything. Remember to take into account tax payments and allow for the fact that you'll no longer receive paid holidays, health insurance, sick pay and a company pension. If you have a big purchase coming up in the near future, such as a new house, you may want to postpone your full time online career until you've secured your mortgage.

3. Are your income streams diverse enough? Are you making all your money from one source? If you're currently making all your money selling similar items on Ebay or earning an income from a small number of affiliate programs or making money from a single program such as Google Adsense, you could be putting yourself at risk. What if the market for the products you are selling disappears? The affiliate programs you are promoting shuts down? You need to take a close look at the sources of your income. Ideally your income should be coming from numerous sources e.g. selling your own products, promoting different affiliate programs, using multiple websites in different niches.

4. Do you have a business plan? Since you are considering taking such a big step you need to have a business plan. This should include a description of your company and the products and services you provide, the analysis of your market, strategy and implementation along with a financial plan.

5. How will you cope with working alone? If you enjoy working with other people every day, it's likely that you may find the transition to working alone quite difficult. You should consider possible strategies to cope with this change. For example you may want to make sure that part of your business involves working with other people - perhaps providing a service locally or consulting. Perhaps you could fill the vacuum of not meeting people at work by joining a club or taking a part time training course. Making an effort to stay in touch and meet up with friends and former colleagues regularly will also help.

If you consider all these factors before quitting your day job, this should give you the best chance possible of becoming a successful full time internet marketer.

Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? Re: What is your biggest challenge? Today? - Hello members, My biggest challenge in the coming year and beyond is without doubt better time management. Like millions of other Internet Marketers I want to work from home full time but its catch 22 isn’t it? To work full time you have to put in almost full time effort but we haven’t got the time. We come home from work and do as many IM hours as we can fit in during evenings and weekends whilst still carrying out our family obligations. If and when I do work from home full time I will be able to structure my days better to get maximum effect from the hours that I work. At the moment I seem to be fire fighting every night trying to catch up. the dream is still alive, LOL Mal.
Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You Re: Workaholism May Be Killing You - Hi Evan, Thanks for this post, I found the article very interesting and I do regularly work 12 hours or more but that is a total of my day job then Internet work when I get home, I must say that I agree with Michelle that I only feel that I work at my day job and my Internet work I really enjoy although some nights I go to bed absolutely shattered. There is an old saying that I think I may have used here before but it is something like “If you enjoy what you do then you never do a days work in your life”. If I ever get to the stage when I work form home full time then this would be the case for me because I love this work and would do it full time from home tomorrow if I could. regards, Mal.
Re: Adrian Fernandez - GH Caskets Re: Adrian Fernandez - GH Caskets - Hi Adrian, Just a quick reply before I turn in for the night. I know how you feel, I have been an enthusiastic Internet Marketer for a while now but like most people who do this I made many mistakes when I started off and it cost me a lot of wasted time and effort. If you are new to this then you are doing well to have found this forum early in your journey because this is a great place to get help and support. There are a lot of members here and around other forums who are trying to work full time from home including me and are squeezing in the extra work required in the evenings and weekends to make it happen. It's a lot of extra work and often involves burning the midnight oil on most nights but I will not stop until I am doing this full time and working from home so I share your goals, to your success, Mal.
My Mentor My Mentor - I do have a mentor, it's my boss at my full time job! He hired me as a part timer 4 years ago and at that time I was a stay at home mom returning to the work force after 17 years of raising 3 kids! Two years after he hired me, I went full time and without his knowledge, advice, guidance over the last 4 years I may not have gotten as far as I am today. (Note: I said not [u:3eacidhz]as far[/u:3eacidhz]) But I would have gotten here regardless, he just helped speed the process! I'm happy at my full time position and now I'm also running a small business on the side and helping my husband (when I can) with his home based business as well as helping to moderate here on Evan Charmichael! I don't think i've done too bad in 4 years!
Re: 3 Signs That I Need To Get Serious About IM... Re: 3 Signs That I Need To Get Serious About IM... - Hi David and GT, I can totally sympathise with your dilemma. For those Internet Marketers who work from home full time, you have my admiration, for those of us still trying to get there we are stuck between two stools. I have my regular job in training which keeps the wolf from the door but because I have to do a fair amount of travelling I sometimes arrive home late. I spend most of my days talking and organising classes and administration so I find that I am mentally not physically tired and it is sometimes difficult to focus. My plan is to redress the balance so that eventually I can reduce my regular work to part time in order to put in the extra time that IM demands. Until that time comes I will always be chasing the clock and always feel guilty if I haven’t spent enough time on the Internet when I get home. regards, Mal.
