I've been a contractor for 4 years and although I'll be the first to say that buying contractor leads works, I don't stop there. If you have been thinking about or are already buying leads from a generic or even a specialty lead generation website you need to rethink your strategy.

Yes of course these companies bring you potential paying projects but you have to ask yourself: "How exclusive is this lead and has it been sold to another company as well".

Some companies recycle their leads. This means they sell the lead once, let it get older, then resell it to someone else. This leads to a prospect who may not even remember filling the form out. Not good.

Still other companies may sell the same lead 2 or more times at the same time, when the lead is new.

There are many other variables I have not mentioned here. My goal in writing this for you today is to make you aware of the fact that in today's economy business owners must take control.

Re: 3 Ways to Grow Your Business in 2011 - Hi David, I've had a lot of success by building my own media list and then emailing out the reporters when I have a story. I've also used PR Leads (paid program) which got me into the New York Times and Forbes. I haven't done much with online press releases - from what I hear they can help you with your SEO but they don't get much mainstream media attention. If you are not doing any of the above your websites will just be one of the millions of the unknown sites in cyber space
