Why Backlink Building is Important for your Online Business

A website is pretty much useless unless you are getting traffic to it on a regular basis. The best traffic you can get to a website is free, targeted, organic traffic from the search engines. In order to do this you will need to find keywords that are fairly easy to rank and then you will need backlink building in order to get it to move up the rankings until you get traffic. Backlinks are sort of like votes for a website. The more votes (backlinks) you get, the higher your web pages are going to rank for their keywords. If you have multiple pages going after different keywords, then you will have to build backlinks to each page in order to get it to rank high enough where it will be in a position to receive traffic.

How to Build Backlinks to your Website:

Backlink building is a slow, boring and tedious process to say the least, but it has to be done if you want your online business to succeed. The major search engines want your business to build backlinks naturally through people in your industry linking to your website. This rarely happens unless you have something really good worth sharing and then still it has to get in front of people first.

Since not everyone is able to produce outstanding quality right off the bat, there are a variety of ways that you can manually build links that are quite effective.

One of the most common and most effective ways to build links is to write articles and to submit these articles to a plethora of article directories. At the end of each article you have the opportunity to leave a few links in the author\'s resource box.

Another great way to pick up links is to find blogs and comment on the blogs content. At the end of the content, towards the bottom of some blogs there is a spot for you to leave a comment and leave your link as well.

The backlink building method that works the best to boost your website high up the search engine rankings is to get high PR contextual links from relevant websites. This of course is the most difficult to do, but the effort spent on this method will surely pay itself off in the long-run. To do this you will either have to buy some aged domains or you will have to put an article on an already high PR page.

Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
Type of business with building - If you owned a building and Wal-Mart was opening its doors across the street in a previously unoccupied area (along with 12-14 small shops), what type of business would you start? Here are the considerations: 1. Money is a non-factor 2. Building is fairly large (10,000) square feet 3. Building is on the corner of a busy intersection (about to get much busier)
