Banner Advertising Step by Step
Banner advertising is simple and effective. I’ll teach you step by step.
Banner advertising is one the oldest type of internet marketing. It is effective, affordable and easy to implement. Before you begin here are some terms you need to know.
There are two types of banner ads static which don’t move and animated which do.
PPC - pay per click is the most popular option when choosing how to pay for you ad. You are charged each time someone clicks on your ad.
CPM - cost per thousand impressions. You are charged each time your ad is shown a thousand times. CPM is used for big website like yahoo.
CPA - cost per action. You are charged when someone signs up from your ad.
CTR - click through rate. This the percentage of people who click on your link.
To start first design your ad. These are the most popular sizes: 300x250, 600x120, 600x160, 728x90. Make sure your banner grabs people’s attention. It’s best if your ad is designed to like it doesn’t belong. This will attract attention and people will click on it. If it blends in you’ll have less success.
Here are some ad copy writing basics that will help you in creating your ad. Make sure your ad incorporates: Attention - facts tell, stories get clicks Interest Desire Action - you have tell people what to do next. You can either write it out “click here” or you can “point where to click.” Basically your ad needs to tell them what to do next. Remember pain attracts more interest than pleasure.
If using an animated feature make sure it’s obnoxious enough to attract attention.
If you don’t have a banner ad designed already and you don’t know how to make one, outsource the work! You can put your project on elance.com and people can bid to complete your project.
Once you have your banner you need to find a website to advertise it on. This is your gathering phase. Always choose a website that targets the type of costumers you are trying to attract. Use alexa.com and quantcast.com to research which website to use.
Researching with alexa.com will let you search by keyword and then display the top sites for that keyword. You can then search the website’s domain for its Alexa.com rating. For the best results the site should rate 250,000 or less. The closer the rating is to 1 the better. For example websites like google are usually number one. This step allows you to leverage someone else's work to expose your ad to a lot of traffic.
Use quantcast.com to research the demographics of the websites you’re researching and make sure they are right for your ad.
Next see if your researched sites allow banner ads and contact their advertising department directly. Always negotiate the price and make sure you know where on the website your ad will go. When you’re just starting choose a short term for your ad and try PPC to test how your ad does.
Here are some websites that are good for testing your ad: Myads.com and aedoadnetwork.com
You can also put banners on blogs, ezines and forums.
You can search on google for PPC banner opportunites. You’ll pay a bit more because you’ll be working with a middleman but keep track of where the ads are doing well and you can go to those sites directly and negotiate a better price.
Always remember to test your ads and once they do well keep posting them, don't forget to manage them and enjoy all the leads you’ll be generating!
