How to Improve Your Landing Page in 10 Easy Steps.

Many people simply don't understand the philosophy behind Landing/Squeeze Pages and don't invest enough time and money into getting it right. Squeeze pages are an art form and deserve to be treated as such, so if you can't do it yourself, or you prefer to have somebody with more experience and knowledge to produce them for you, make sure they adhere to the following design strategy, which should produce a winning combination. Step.1. Don't reinvent the wheel

There are plenty of great squeeze page examples that convert like crazy, all over the internet, all you have to do is find the most suitable one that pertains to your niche, and duplicate it. If it is working in your particular niche already, it is unlikely that you will need to alter it, certainly not in the beginning anyway. So in the early days try to use it as is. As you become more experienced you will be able to tweak it to improve conversions, but for now leave well alone.

Step 2. How to Do Your Research

This next stage is quite easy really, to do your research simply Google to find relevant landing pages, then use Alexa to establish page ranking, which will tell you how good they are with regards to content for your marketplace. Remember to keep the profile of your typical visitor in mind, and add keyword search terms when adding any content.

Step 3. If it's Not Needed, Don't add it!

A Landing Page only has one purpose, and that is to collect the name and email address of your visitor, so the overall design should reflect that. Any distractions can have a devastating effect on conversion rates so the message here is don't overload it with any other links, and make your message absolutely crystal clear as to your offer. Your visitor should know exactly why they should subscribe, and in actual fact, the only choice they should have is to subscribe or leave the page.

Step 4. Make it Personal.

As you become more familiar with squeeze page layout and design, and gain more experience with what does or doesn't convert, you will gradually become more and more aware of subtle changes you can make to increase your opt-in rate. Two of the most effective methods you can implement which can dramatically increase your opt-in rate are to add your signature to the bottom, and also place your photograph in the left hand column just below the headline area. This serves to let your visitor know that you are real, and your offer is also real. Basically anything that isn't crucial to the conversion shouldn't be there.

Step 5. Solve the Problem.

If you choose your text wisely your conversion rate will be a reflection of that. Make sure that your visitor's problem is about to be solved by your solution and how the amazing benefits they are about to receive will change their life. In short, you need to make it a no-brainer for them to subscribe.

Step 6. Opt-in Basics.

One of the biggest mistakes that you can make is, asking for too much info, the best way to absolutely optimize your opt-ins is to keep things to a minimum, this means asking only for first name and email. Occasionally, especially if you have a high end product, it may be prudent to ask for telephone number. But in my experience even if you do that, make it an option only. In general the less info you ask for the easier it is to get.

Step 7. Make it Urgent & Scarce.

You must make your visitor an offer that is time sensitive, you must make them feel that by not opting in they will be missing out on some vital information that won't be available much longer, and as you are giving them something for free it will add to the relationship building and increase your overall conversion rate.

Step 8. The Eye-line Strategy.

It is common knowledge in the copywriting world, that when reading, the human eye always follows a specific pattern, so it obviously makes great sense to ensure your content matches. On top of that you want all of your important info to be above the fold (bottom of screen), so you need to watch the amount of images you have that may distract the reader away from your opt-in box, so this is not a place for any sidebars or ads or anything that may distract.

Step 9. Your Anti-spam Message.

You must make sure that you make your visitors immediately aware that you will not use their details for anything other than the purpose of the opt-in. You won't sell, rent or do anything that would compromise your relationship with them, because after all, they are placing their trust in you.

Step 10. Test.Test.Test.

Remember that anything you can measure, you can improve. So analysis of your landing page stats is of extreme importance if you are to grow your business. The critical numbers are obviously the number of visitors and the number of opt-ins. If these numbers aren't an acceptable rate for your niche then you must change something. This must be a constant process, you must continually analyze your results. Continue to test, tweak and modify until you are achieving an opt-in rate that helps your business to grow.

Finally, it's important to remember that with a landing/squeeze page in place within your business you can move it on to the next level with subscribers who trust you, look forward to hearing from you and who will be the most important part of your business.

Re: Examples of Great Landing Pages Re: Examples of Great Landing Pages - Kevin, been a while! hey I just reviewed the Landing Page - I like it! The structure is all there and I like how the testimonials are "related" to the business benefit of becoming a Partner - Nice work! Two points: 1. Have you tried other headlines or split tested other headlines? You can use google website optimizer to do it. I know you can come up with a slightly stronger headline unless this one came out on top. 2. I feel that when the page first loads it looks "incomplete". It's just a visual thing. I guess i was expecting a border around the content, a header image maybe... it's just the way i am wired to expect webpages to load. This point may be insignificant. Testing is the only way to know for sure.
Page Rank Changes Page Rank Changes - Hi Kevin - there is a lot of speculation as to why so many websites lost Page Rank. A few new sites that I've been following also got Page Rank for the first time. Every time Google does a Page Rank update there are websites that get caught in the crossfire and have to work to get their rankings back up!

Re: e-Commerce and e-Payment providers Re: e-Commerce and e-Payment providers - When I came back to Japan in 1999 I sometimes used to ask my students if they would buy anything on the Internet and at that time most thought it was too risky. I'd encourage them to try by using well known sites such as Amazon.co.jp and also pointed out that using a credit card on a reputable site was safer than using it at a restaurant. I can't remember the last time I had that discussion or when the "tipping point" occurred in Japan. To answer your other question, I use Paypal for several reasons: 1. Brand familiarity 2. Easy to use 3. Free to withdraw 50,000yen+ to my Japanese bank account - a huge benefit (but maybe other systems also offer that...?) 4. Easy to cancel subscriptions On the down side, their transaction fees are quite costly, they are difficult to contact and when disputes arise you can sometimes lose even when you can prove via your tracking service that the disputed item was "delivered" to the customer's address!
