How to handle stress in your side business

If you are a side business owner, (or planning to become one), your life will become a juggling act. You may lose your sense of balance, and get stressed. Majorly stressed. You’ll need to learn how to handle stress so you don’t become overwhelmed.

Stress is the opposite of balance. Balance, on the other hand, doesn’t mean an absence of stress. Balance is more than just taking time off. It’s making sure that all aspects of your life: personal, spiritual, emotional and financial, are in sync. It means not overloading on one aspect more than the other.

No one can tell you how to define a balanced life. You know what balance means to you. There’s no right or wrong way to find balance. What is balanced for you may be completely out of whack for someone else. Same with stress. Everyone handles stress differently. Look at the 5 tips below for strategies to help you manage your stress:

Tip#1: Start like you mean to end. The first step to handling stress is choosing a business that is aligned with your life’s goals and priorities.

Tip#2: Review how you presently spend your time. What are you most overloaded with? Do you feel it’s out of balance with your other priorities?

What do you need to change so your life is less stressed? Do you need to pray more? Exercise more? Or, have you been spending so much time on play that you need to work more?

Tip #3: Eliminate time suckers and unimportant tasks. If you feel you have not been productive with any of your tasks, consider if they actually need to be performed. Think how can you make your tasks simpler to perform. Or, how can you get help?

Tip #4: Plan time off. If you are overloaded, plan time off, not just from your business, but sometimes, your life. It doesn’t have to be physical like going on a vacation break. How about a mental break? Do something you enjoy and stop feeling guilty about it. Don’t multitask it either (unless that brings you joy too!).

Remember, though, handling stress is more than just taking time off. What’s the point if you’re coming back to the same chaos?

Tip #5: Determine your priorities and make plans to spend the most time on them. What’s important to you or what moves you forward? Pay the most attention to that first.

Ultimately, you need to plan for balance. You can’t just hope your life will become less stressed, you have to make it happen.

I would recommend to every business owner to find a website partner who can handle the Website Design/SEO/Hosting by themselves while still at a reasonable cost to your business. This is the most economical way to operate the online side of your business if you are unsure about it. I actually do this for a few clients myself and all I do is send them a bill every year for hosting/seo but if there are any problems its up to me to call the hosting company to find out what's wrong as well as keep them high ranking for particular keywords. If anyone else has found it difficult with their website, hosting or the management of any online services please post your feedback here and I'll try to advise your best option.
Joint Ventures Joint Ventures - It all depends on what your skills are. What kind of help do you need? Do you want someone to help you with the marketing side? do you need help on the financing side? Do you need help producing the product or delivering the service? Watch out though - a lot of people start off in business with a partner, then someone ends up doing more work and the other person resents it and the business falls apart.
biting off more than you can chew biting off more than you can chew - Some people are scared of growth... for fear they will bite off more than they can chew. A good example of this is a franchisee I know who is selling his business after only less than 2 years in service, not because the business is not doing well, but because he is afraid he will not be able to handle it at it's full potential. Although his dog care type franchise can house up to 125 dogs a day, he has limited himself to only taking in 35 dogs a day for fear he will not be able to handle more than that. He also doesn't want to hire more people because he is worried about the overhead. He got at a comfortable level of income for himself and simply stopped the franchises potential right there. I suppose there are many different reasons why someone will not allow their business to grow, but I thought I'd share this with you as one example.

It can be very time consuming, something clients don't realize, so I probably would not want to do more than I can handle while still working full-time.
