I Read Your Ebook, and It Gave Me A Headache!

I have wanted to write this for a few years now, and certainly others words than headache come to mind to describe your ebook, but let’s stick with that for now. If you are anything like me, when I am at the computer I am working; I don’t take time to actually read an ebook online. Further I have yet to join the Kindle fans, but it is on my Christmas list.

So probably like most of us, I print them out for a leisurely read away from the computers and family noise; you know what I mean, distractions, TV, games and such

I seldom get headaches, so let us call the following pet peeves:

• By now you are probably saying too many I’s in this article, that is fine

• You are probably also thinking by now; doesn’t this guy even know how to punctuate ebook?

Peeves and suggestions:

Have you put yourself in the reader’s shoes, or your ebook in the readers’ eyes

• What does your ebook look like and check off the following
• If you cannot understand or read it, then no one else will either.
• Psst, this also cover your ebooks, videos, bios, background schemes and, and_

How about the writer that love his cover so much that he/or she decides to give it some colour, or all colour so that It sucks up your ink even in greyscale

Where are your page numbers?

• How often this is overlooked.
• Try sorting out a 50 page ebook you just printed and have dropped it
• You have to keep referring back to the computer to see what goes where, why?

How you provided a logical chapter and paragraph labelling or numbering

Do you put the name of your ebook and/or perhaps the chapter in your header

Images, illustrations, tables and such

• If you are not preparing a “white paper” then
• Are there too many cutesy images, more ink suckers.
• I delete most of the images before I print
• Complicated images that cannot be read on or offline. Reminds me of those slide show with too many lines of test and detail that no one can read

• Text boxes with grayscale so that the fine print does not clearly show

Fancy fonts and font sizes

• Use fonts that are easy to read and a size that is readable; after all isn’t that your objective?
• White text on any colour other than black cannot be read clearly
• White text on any colour other than black, that is too small in font size cannot be read clearly
• White text using a fancy font on any colour cannot be read clearly
• Paragraph title and such in off colours often cannot be read clearly
• Highlighting one paragraph over another with different fonts and background colours often cannot be read clearly

Spell check and Grammar, or if you prefer Grammar and Spell check?

• Yes I know - I need this one also

Are we selling images, fonts and colour schemes or are we selling CONTENT?

What ever happened to KISS, black text on a white background?

While you do not have to agree with me on all of the above points;

• do yourself a favour and take a closer look at your own ebook
• before you publish and make your GOOD CONTENT look BAD
