Pinterest Enters the Rapidly Growing Addiction to Image Sharing. While videos surely still rank first, interest in image sharing is growing rapidly with the recent introduction of Pinterest. I call it an addiction, because of its ability to mesmerize you into hours of online activity such as pinning your photos, re-pinning others, liking and sharing your comments. Pinterest is currently in beta and by invitation only, but invitations may be obtained on-site or by joining through a follower. While Pinterest is free to join, some at followers may charge you a fee for joining through their link. Hmmm and they call this social networking.

Pinterest is a social bookmarking site where users collect and share photos of their favorite events, interests and hobbies. Earlier this year the image-sharing network exploded into one of the fastest growing social networks of all time

2011 Experian Hitlist ranked Pinterest number 10 in total visits, however its explosive growth during early 2012 has pushed it to number 3 (104 million), and a 4,000 per cent growth in visits in 6 months. Facebook still enjoy a commanding lead with (7 billion) followed by Twitter (182 million)

I use social networking for my various businesses, including scam avoidance; however, I never grasped the power of connecting with others through image sharing. The growth and sudden popularity of Pinterest, got my attention – sort of what is all the fuss about. I call it an addiction, because I could easily spend my day seeing the beauty of the world in pictures; pictures that I never took while in the military and business in 55 countries. I can see what my former realtor associates were posting for sale, architecture, gardens, automobiles, technology, and of course the beauty of the ladies.

Females by the way currently make up approximately 60% of Pinterest membership. While my picture may not capture their heart and follows, maybe my sensitivity will in them over. Hmmm, wonder what does a sensitivity image look like?

Pinterest won best social media app and people's voice award for best functioning visual design at the 2012 Webby Awards

Pinterest currently strips all affiliate links, so affiliates need to create their own blog or site to promote their affiliation. See also current rules for Amazon affiliations

Checkout the copyright concerns over the use of photos that you do not own. At present re-pinning others does not seem to be a problem. Your pins or re-pins come with the image, a like and a comment features. So make your comment and likes count to increase your presence online.

Anything that shows the rate grow number that Pinterest has shown, will attract the scammers

Social engineering of Pinterest users by scammers to propagate surveys promising free products was noted by computer security firms Symantec and Trend Micro in March 2012. Scam images, often branded with a well-known company name like Starbucks, offer incentives such as gift cards for completing a survey. Once the link in the description is clicked, users are taken to an external site and asked to re-pin the scam image. Victims are phished for their personal information and the promised free product is never delivered. Wikipedia

Other scammers have capitalized on the lack of an official Google Play app. Low-quality Pinterest apps purporting to be official have appeared that generate ad revenue or monitor the downloader's activity. Wikipedia

As Pinterest, the "virtual corkboard," picks up steam, cyber attackers have begun tainting the site with malicious ads.

The social networking site du jour lets you clip pretty images from around the Interwebs and pin them to your virtual corkboard, which you share online. Another member looking at your Pinterest board can click into your pinned images, and get redirected to the original site. As with Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and other sites targeted by cyber attackers, Pinterest offersa false sense of legitimacy: if a survey promising free Starbucks is on your friend's board, surely it's safe, right?

The Pinterest scams draw your attention with freebie offers or enticing photos. Clicking on them automatically redirects you to a phishing site where you enter personal details into legit-looking surveys. Of course, you'll never receive the promised goods, but the scammers will use your personal details for more nefarious purposes. PC Mag/Security Watch
